  5. The Ideal • Does the Bible describe a time before the rebellion? • …before the creation of humans • …before the creation of angels

  6. “In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1) • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) • “In the beginning…[God] was with God…” • “Father…I want them to see my glory, which you gave me because you loved me before the world was made.” (John 17:24)

  7. The Trinity • FATHER: • “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you” (Luke 3:22). • “You are in me and I am in you” (John 17:21). • “For this reason God raised him to the highest place above and gave him the name that is greater than any other name.” (Philippians 2:9)

  8. THE SON: • “If you knew me, you would know my Father also” (John 8:19) • “’If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do now know me?   14. The ideal for humanity • “Then I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, dressed like a bride ready for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne say, ‘God lives with humans! God will make his home with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won't be any more death. There won't be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared.’” (Revelation 21:2-4) • “The will see his face and his name will be written on their foreheads.” (Revelation 22:4)

The ideal for humanity: a world made for romance? • “Imagine the most beautiful scenes you have ever known on this earth—rain forests, the prairie in full bloom, storm clouds over the African savanna, the Alps under a winter snow. Then imagine it all on the day it was born. . . . Into this world God opens his hand, and the animals spring forth. Myriads of birds, in every shape and size and song, take wing—hawks, herons, warblers. All the creatures of the sea leap into it—whales, dolphins, fish of a thousand colors and designs.

  16. “Thundering across the plains race immense herds of horses, gazelles, buffalo, running like the wind. It is more astonishing than we could possibly imagine. No wonder ‘the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy’ (Job 38:7). A great hurrah goes up from the heavens!”

Creation as Romance • “The relational implication of the seventh day is often overlooked, dwarfed by the tendency to prioritize God’s power, sovereignty, and majesty as more representative features of Creation. Power and sovereignty are attributes of God, but from God’s side it is not power that is projected most forcefully in the institution of the seventh day. When God ceases the work of creating, hallowing the seventh day, we see God coming into an enduring relationship with Creation. ‘By resting on the seventh day, God is thereby shown to have entered into the time of the created order,’ says Fretheim.

Creation as Romance • “Intimacy threatens to eclipse majesty in this scenario; at the very least we are led to see God's desire for intimacy in the seventh day to the point that God’s awesome power and majesty are veiled and held in the background so as not to intimidate human approach . . . Perceiving the seventh day as a relational marker enriches the theology of Creation, promising to rectify the distortion in which the emphasis on sovereignty implies detachment. . .

  32. Restoring the Ideal • But Jesus called the disciples together and said: “You know that foreign rulers like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over everyone they rule. But don’t act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. And if you want to be first, you must be the slave of the rest. The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people. (Matthew 20:20-28 – CEV)

Marriage • “Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it….Men ought to love their wives just as they love their own bodies…As the scripture says, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.’ There is a deep secret truth revealed in this scripture, which I understand as applying to Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:25-32 – GN)
