  1. NICI IPv6 Infrastructure Development StatusIPv6 Summit in Taiwan 2005Aug. 23rd, 2005 Jing-Jou YenNational Center for High-Performance Computing

  2. Outline • The NICI IPv6 Steering Committee • Infrastructure Division Tasks • IPv6 Networks in Taiwan: • ASNet IPv6 Network • TANET IPv6 Network • TWAREN IPv6 Network • GSN IPv6 Network

  3. NICI IPv6 Steering Committee National Initiatives for Communication & Information (NICI) NICI Counseling Committee IPv6 Steering Committee (Chair: DGT) Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) IPv6 Standards & Testing Division IPv6 Application & Promotion Division IPv6 R&D Division IPv6 Infrastructure Development Division

  4. Infrastructure Division Tasks • To help domestic ISPs convert their network infrastructures from IPv4 to IPv6 • To construct Taiwan’s R&E networks (e.g. TANet and TWAREN) with IPv6 enabled infrastructures • To integrate Taiwan’s government, academic institutes, industry, and commercial IPv6 network infrastructures • To develop IPv6 infrastructure-based applications such as digital A/V content, VoIPv6, multicasting, and grid computing • To share our domestic experience and technical expertise in IPv6 with other countries

  5. ASNet IPv6 Network • ASNet • Academic Service Network (ASN: 9264) • Maintained by Academia Sinica Computing Centre • IPv6 Address allocated • Pseudo-TLA: 3FFE:4001::/32, 2002/3, will be phased out on 6/6/2006 • Sub-TLA: 2001:C08::/32, 2002/7 • Architecture • Layout: Layer 2 and Layer 3 peering • Protocol: BGP4+、RIPng、OSPFv3

  6. ASIX6 Exchange Network • ASNet Internet eXchange v6 (ASIX6) • Maintained by ASCC • Purpose and Benefits • To provide the global IPv6 connection for IX participants • To provide the mature IPv6 infrastructure for IPv6 development and implementation • To share the IPv4/v6 transfer experience with IX participants • To minimize the cost for IX participants in initial IPv6 construction • To improve the IPv6 traffic performance and network quality

  7. IPv6 Exchange Links • Domestic Native Links with • 8 Networks • Bandwidth:4.3 Gbps • Overseas Native Links with • 68 Networks • Bandwidth:6.99 Gbps • Links to IPv6 IXs • NSPIXP-6, StarLight, 6TAP,…………

  8. IPv6 Backbone Worldwide Infrastructure

  9. TWAREN IPv6 Network Platform • TWAREN (TaiWan Advanced Research and Education Network) • Maintained by NCHC • Establish IPv6 connections with R&E networks or ISPs • Enable TWAREN IPv6 multicast • Develop applications in the TWAREN IPv6 network environment

  10. TWAREN IPv6 Network Backbone SINICA 10G (POS, GE) CISCO 7609 CISCO GSR12416 NTU NCU NCTU Taipei NTHU NDHU Hsinchu NCHU NCNU Taichung CCU NCKU Tainan NSYSU

  11. IPv6 Address Assignment • TWAREN IPv6 address • 2001:C58:A000::/35 • 2001:0E10::/32 • Hierarchical IPv6 address assignment policy • TWAREN IPv6 address assignment • Core: /35 • POP: /38 • Institution: /48

  12. TWAREN IPv6 Peering • TWAREN IPv6 peering policy • Serve as IPv6 Transit Backbone • Peering with Internet/Internet2 • IPv6 peering networks: • Domestic: 7 (TANet, ASNet, Hinet…) • International: 8 (Abilene, 6TAP, CANet4…) • Will expand IPv6 peering networks

  13. CA*Net4 Taipei TANet2 TWAREN 1.6 G STM-16) Abilene TWAREN IPv6 peering networks

  14. TWAREN IPv4/v6 Multicast • TWAREN IPv4 multicast • IPv4 backbone multicast-enabled • Multicast peering with Abilene、AARnet • TWAREN IPv6 multicast • IPv6 multicast-enabled within core nodes and multicast peer with HiNet • IPv6 multicast will be deployed throughout the entire network in Q3, 2005 • Will peer with ASNet in the near future

  15. TWAREN IPv6 Multicast Backbone SINICA NTU NCU NCTU Taipei NTHU NDHU Hsinchu NCHU NCNU IPv6 multicast (phase 1) Taichung IPv6 multicast (phase 2) CCU CISCO 7609 CISCO GSR12416 NCKU Tainan NSYSU

  16. The Eco Grid on IPv6 • Location: Nan-Jen-Shan and Ken-Ting in Ping-Tung • Work Items: • Setup IPv6 wireless access • Develop IPv6 Smart Sensor Server • Provide Grid Integration Services • Key Technologies: • IPv6 Smart Sensor Server: Middleware and IPv6 support • MPEG-4 video streaming over IPv6

  17. Enabling IPv6 in TANet’s Backbone • Enable IPv6 in TANet’s backcone • To provide transparent IPv6 to IPv6, IPv4 to IPv6 and IPv6 to IPv4 communications • To provide TANet users with easy access to IPv6 application software and to effectively promote IPv6 technology • To construct IPv6 DNS root servers application servers and for TANet

  18. TANET IPv4/v6 Co-Existing Network

  19. GSN IPv6 Network • Government Service Network (GSN) is one of the most important government-owned networks in Taiwan • It provides government services over a reliable high-speed backbone network. • The objective of this task is to construct an IPv6 backbone for GSN. This IPv6 backbone will connect government nodes so data can be exchanged over IPv6.

  20. GSN IPv6 Network Architecture
