Demographics • With 18,244 people, Johnson County is the 71st most populated county in the state of Tennessee out of 95 counties • The largest Johnson County racial/ethnic groups are: • White (96.4%) • Black (2.2%) • Hispanic (1.6%) • Native American (0.2%) • Asian (0.2%) • Johnson County Middle School: • White (98%) • Hispanic (1.7%) • Asian (0.3%) • Black (0%) • Native American (0%) • The median age for Johnson County residents is 43.3 years young.

Housing • Average household size in Mountain City is 2.4 • Average contract rent is $332/month in Mountain City and $532/month in the state of Tennessee • House or condo value in Mountain City is $100,865 on average and in the average in the state of Tennessee is $137, 300 • In our surveys, the almost all of the students said that they live in a house, while there were a handful who told us they live in a apartment or a trailer.

Music • The majority of Mountain City’s regional radio stations are related to Country Music or Religiously affiliated • Three of the strongest FM radio stations include: • W214AP (90.7 FM; JOHNSON CITY, TN; Owner: THE MOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO) • WXBQ-FM (96.9 FM; BRISTOL, TN; Owner: BRISTOL BROADCASTING COMPANY, INC.) • WETS-FM (89.5 FM; JOHNSON CITY, TN; Owner: EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY) • Students at JCMS said some of their favorite bands/artists are One Direction, Suicide Silence, Guns N’ Roses, Hopsin, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ke$ha, and “a band you don’t know or care about”

Food • In Mountain City there are five grocery stores, two convenience stores, and six full service restaurants. • 11.8% of adults in Mountain City have diabetes • 31.8% of adults are obese • 15% of low-income preschoolers are obese • Every day on the morning announcements, they tell the students what the lunch menu is for the day and it is always very traditional southern, fried food.
