  2. Speech & language disability or delay A developmental delay in language is a lag in age appropriate development. The most common delay in children younger than five years of age. When a delay is suspected a comprehensive evaluation assesses a variety of areas and may lead to recommendation for therapy.

  3. Step one, hearing evaluation. • A hearing test is conducted by an Audiologist. • If a hearing loss is diagnosed, • A Speech and language therapist or pathologist works with the Teacher, classroom staff, parents and all clinical members of the collaborative team.

  4. Speech and language therapy occurs in a variety of settings. • Individual sessions at home. • Individual sessions in a clinical setting • Group sessions in a classroom, preschool or day care setting.

  5. Making talking a positive experience. Name objects and provide information about the object. I.e. function, description Encourage conversation at all meals. Sing songs, and use nursery rhymes. Expand on the child’s spontaneous utterances by repeating the child’s words and adding on new information and vocabulary.

  6. Make sure to provide language stimulation at the child’s developmental level. Encourage the child to retell stories in his own words.
