  1. Gates Millennium Scholars Program

  2. Overview • Established in 1999 with an initial $1 million dollar grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation • Goal: fund and support minority students with great financial need • Undergraduate through doctoral support! • Academic Empowerment: mentoring, online resource center, etc.

  3. Eligibility • Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American • Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States • Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED • Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited college or university (with the exception of students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall of 2011 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student. First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.

Eligibility (cont.) • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities  • Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria • Have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student’s application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities(Recommender Form) by the deadline

The Facts • Support for the cost of education by covering unmet need and self-help • Renewable awards for Gates Millennium Scholars maintaining satisfactory academic progress • Graduate school funding for continuing Gates Millennium Scholars in the areas of: • computer science • education, • engineering, • library science, • mathematics, • public health, • science • Leadership development programs

  6. The Application Process • Requires: • A recommendation • A nomination • Student Application • Tips: • There are over ten essays you have to write. This takes time! • Notify your nominator and Recommender well ahead of time.

  7. The Recommendation • Select a recommender who knows you well and can describe your involvement in leadership and community activities. • Notify them before the beginning of the school year because it is a lengthy process. • Include the recommendation form, stamped & mailed envelope as well as any pertinent information for the recommendation.

  8. The Nomination • Is the simplest part of the process. • Someone who can describe your academic course load and character • Probably be best to select your counselor • Your nominator can be your recommender as well and vice versa.

  9. The Application • There are 10 essays you need to complete! • You must begin as soon as possible. • You should have a resume handy listing your extracurricular activities, volunteering experiences and/or leadership positions. • BEGIN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
