  1. Semantics (from Greek "σημαντικός" - semantikos) is the study of meaning. It typically focuses on the relation between signifiers - words, phrases, signs and symbols - and what they stand for. From wikipedia

  2. Semantics nowadays: Google

  3. Example: hot dog

  4. we want to find things on the web-> Google search for ‘hot dog’

  5. Google sifts through trillions of web pages which it has come to understand

  6. Hot dog Hot dog ??? Google links what it thinks we mean by a search phrase with what it thinks a web page is about.

  7. What is happening is Google is looking for ‘Machine readable information’

  8. It’s trying to work out what things mean.

  9. “Hot dog” Is this an expression? someone’s address? a name? is this information connected with that information? What is the most important entry to display? Why does “hot dog” link to that ?

  10. Intro to the Semantic Web http://youtu.be/OGg8A2zfWKg The Future Internet: Service Web 3.0 http://youtu.be/off08As3siM A story about the Semantic Web http://youtu.be/bd8zR0v7Jts

  11. The web is moving from being a series of closed monolithic pages of information that we hop across like stepping stones

  12. to being tiny particles of information aggregated and aligned with whatever purpose we have so that we will be able to swim through it like water.

  13. This transition starts in the code:by separating out the core elements of web pages

  14. Content Structure Presentation

  15. Content Here’s the information

  16. Structure Here’s the context of the information, how it should be labeled and classified

  17. Presentation Here’s how that information should be presented for a particular device and audience looking at it.

  18. This simple idea of taking content and using code to give it structure and then applying appropriate presentation is at the heart of where the web is going.

  19. Because we have used the principle of semantics to give structure to the content we can reinterpret it and present it in any format on any device we desire.

  20. we can understand and re-use the content in machine readable ways

  21. Result -> more effective, more accurate, more ubiquitous information

  22. So, effective communication requires understanding of every level of web design

  23. Technical, cultural, visual, linguistic, semantic, economic, taxonomic and more
