  1. CORIOLIS EFFECT • THE Lab with the balloon showed you the effect of the Earth spinning on winds and ocean currents. • What happened as you rotated the balloon? • What happened as you got closer to the center (equator)? • What is the relationship between the direction of motion of the balloon and wind currents on Earth? • How does this demonstrate the Coriolis effect? • How might speed affect your results?

  2. What happened as you rotated the balloon? • The rotation caused DEFLECTION of the marker line. Meaning – your marker line wasn’t straight but was deflected or deviated from it’s intended path.

  3. What happened as you got closer to the center (equator)? • As you move closer to the equator the marker line was less affected by the rotation.

  4. What is the relationship between the direction of motion of the balloon and wind currents on Earth? • In the NORTHERN hemisphere the wind is deflected to the RIGHT (therefore storms rotate counterclockwise) • In the SOUTHERN hemisphere the wind is deflected to the LEFT (therefore storms rotate clockwise) • NOVA

  5. How does speed affect your results? • VIDEO • The Earth spins slower at the poles because you have shorter distance to travel – faster at the equator because the distance is greater.

  6. READ OVER the papers I passed out …. • Do the worksheet
