  3. Prince Georgy of Vladimir founded a city of Malij Kitezh on the bank of the Volga. A little later he went for a walk to the nearest forest and he was amazed to find a very beautiful lake. He had never seen such a marvelous lake before. Its name was Svetloyar, which meant that it was clear and light. The Prince got so fascinated by that place that he decided to built a new city there, a city of Bolshoi Kitezh. It is said that the city has been built by 1168, but no one knows yet if it is true.   4. What the city looked like The city looked really grand. There were a lot of churches there and it was snow-white. The city was rather large and famous, a lot of people visited it and also lived there. It was a symbol of purity and God-faith. Next Page

  5. What happened in 1238 • In1237 Batu Khan attacked Ryazan and Vladimir. Prince Georgy’s family was killed. As soon as he knew about it he started gathering an army to fight the Mongols. However, his army was defeated and the Prince himself was killed. He was kind, generous and good-hearted. Next Page

  6. What happened to the city • When the Mongols attacked the city of Kitezh the Prince wasn’t there, however. The city looked helpless and the people weren’t going to fight. They prayed to God for help and as soon as the enemies rushed to the city, suddenly a lot of fountains appeared from the underground and the Mongols had to stop. • A few minutes later there was a huge lake around the city and it began to sink into water. Soon it disappeared at all and was saved from the enemies in this way. Next Page

  7. The legend of the city today • During the Second World War a lot of people prayed there and it was one of the religious centres. Nowadays different scientists make researches around Lake Svetloyar. But no oneknows if it was real or not. The city still keeps its secrets and mysteries. The end!
