  4. Crop Rotation • Crop rotates 1) root 2) seed/ fruits 3) stems/ leaf • Helps maintain the fertility of a field • Diversity of crops allow for more rotation • 500 AD: 2 crop • 800 AD: 3 crop • 1800 AD: 4 crop

  5. 2) Dairy Farming • Where? Practiced on large farms near urban areas • India, US, China, Pakistan, Russia largest producers. • Transportation factors play a big role in consumption • Milkshed: ring surrounding a city for which milk is supplied. 1840’s) 30 mile-radius Today) 300 miles • Sold to wholesalers/ retailers. • Distance makes the product

  6. Challenges for Dairy Farmers • Lack of profit and excessive work • Labor-intensive: cows must be milked twice a day • Winter feed (cost & storage)

Wheat #1 grain = America’s Bread Basket • Grain is the seed from various grasses (wheat, corn, oats, barley, rice, millet, etc) • Grown for human consumption. • Growing season rotates: Winter-wheat belt: KS, CO, OK (autumn to summer) Spring-wheat belt: DK, MT, Canada (spring to summer) • Tech: Reaper & Combines

  8. 4) Livestock Ranching • What? Grazing livestock over extensive area • Where? Semi-arid – arid regions (poor soil for crops) i.e. America West • Evolved: 1) open ranges 2) fixed farming 3) Fattening farms • Western USA = nursery for Eastern cities • The“Code of the West” to “Range Wars”

  9. 5) Mediterranean Agriculture • S. Euro, N. Africa, W. Asia. Hilly & Mountainous • Winter: moisture and moderate temp Summer: hot & dry • Agricultural base is horticulture – growing fruits, vegetables, flower and trees • Producer of olives, grapes, wine
