  2. Preview Questions • Before reading the passage, quickly preview (skim) the questions. • This will help you to FOCUS your reading and read for a PURPOSE. • As you read, keep those questions in mind & underline words/phrases that might help you determine the correct answer

  3. Don’t Overlook Text Features • The title can sometimes provide a clue to the main idea of a passage • Headings & subheadings can help you locate details quickly; they can also help you organize long passages into separate bits of information • Charts & Graphs may provide answers to certain questions- don’t forget to look at those! • Pictures & captions often have needed information, too

  4. Mark or Underline Key Information • You are permitted to write in your test booklet (not for doodling, but as a reading STRATEGY) • Underline, circle, or mark key information as you read • For instance, you can underline the main idea of each paragraph • You can circle dates or other information you recognize from the questions you previewed

  5. What if I don’t know a word? • Use CONTEXT CLUES to help determine the meaning (in other words, use nearby words and sentences to help you make a good guess)- become a WORD DETECTIVE! • Use your knowledge of prefixes, roots, and suffixes to figure out the meaning of a word (epidermis: I know that DERM has to do with skin) (hydroplane: I know that HYDRO has to do with water)

The Questions…….. • Read ALL PARTS of a question and ALL answer choices • Use process of elimination; you should generally be able to eliminate at least 2 wrong answers • When selecting between the remaining 2 choices, GO BACK to the passage • Do NOT rely on outside knowledge to answer questions- ONLY THE PASSAGE

  7. More about questions…….. • Do NOT skip or leave any question blank! • You should never finish FCAT with an answer sheet that is not completely filled in (if you leave it blank, it will definitely be wrong! If you at least attempt it, you could get it right!)

  8. Answer Sheets • Do not make stray marks on the answer sheet (those will be picked up by the machine & can interfere with you getting a correct score!) • Bubble in the circles completely and darkly • If you change an answer, be careful to not tear your answer sheet while erasing • Don’t skip questions/answers- this can cause you to accidentally mark an answer for the wrong question & get them out of order • Use only the #2 pencil provided to you!

  9. Timing • You do want to be mindful of time; the teacher should write the stopping & starting times on white board for you. • Make sure you are about halfway through the questions when you are halfway through the testing time • Don’t go too fast OR too slow (think “Goldilocks”……..just right!)

  10. Miscellaneous • Don’t underestimate the importance of having a good breakfast each morning! Just think about how many hours it has been since you have had food or drink……..your body needs hydration & nutrition to function AT ITS BEST • “While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform their best, kids need it even more. Their growing bodies and developing brains rely heavily on the regular intake of food. When kids skip breakfast, they can end up going for as long as eighteen hours without food or water.”

  11. “By recharging your brain and your body, you'll be more efficient in just about everything you do.” • “Studies show that missing breakfast impacts a student’s ability to learn, which can lead to lower test scores, slower memories and overall difficulty concentrating.” • Which of these are the best choices? Doughnut Egg Protein Bar Soda Water Vitamin Water Pop Tart Oatmeal Cereal Milk Caffeine drink Candy Fruit Chips

  12. And……. • Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night (preferably 9!) That means if you get up at 6:30, you should be ASLEEP by 9:30 ! • “Not only is sleep necessary for your body, it's important for your brain, too. Though no one is exactly sure what work the brain does when you're asleep, some scientists think that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you snooze.” • “Adolescents need 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep. Children need 10 hours and adults need 8 1/4 hours.” • “Sleep deprivation can impair memory and inhibit creativity making it difficult for sleep deprived students to learn. “

  13. Last but not least…. • Be on time! • This is your chance to show what you know and SHINE!! • “You just gotta ignite the lightAnd let it shineJust own the nightLike the Fourth of JulyCause baby you're a fireworkCome on show 'em what you're worth” • Now…..go rock the FCAT !!!!!
