  1. Simon Kenton High School Pre-ALEKS MEAN MAP Assessment score = 215 (norm = 234.9) MEAN Algebra 1 grade = 75.3

  2. Simon Kenton High School • Enrollment = 1700 students • 30% free and reduced • 14% of our population participating in Math or Reading RTI • ALEKS classes • 9th grade class – 17 students • 10th grade class – 21 students • 11th grade class – 10 students

  3. Criteria for selection • Criteria for the class: • Below benchmark on EXPLORE test • Low MAP score (215-229) • Non special education • Input from current Algebra teacher • Meeting with selected students & student contract • Parent contact through letter

  4. Math Counts (ALEKS) course • Math Counts class: 2 groups of 12 students rotating between small group and computer instruction each day. 65 minutes everyday with 2 teachers. • Computer Instruction - Students work individually using ALEKS while one teacher rotates room answering any additional questions. Scheduled progress report every Friday. • Small Group Instruction – Second teacher & peer tutors use the Ready to Learn and Not Mastered topics from ALEKS to work on different topics with students in 3-4 groups. • Students earn math elective credit and a grade for course.

ALEKS during RTI time • RTI time: Students report to computer lab during non instructional time (SKORE). 28 minutes everyday with 2 teachers. • Computer Instruction – Students work individually on ALEKS while one teacher rotates room answering any additional questions. Scheduled progress report every other Friday. • Small Group Instruction – Second teacher takes small group of students into separate room to work on Readyto Learn and Not Mastered topics from ALEKS. • Students do not received a grade nor credit for this time.

  6. Encouragements • Rewards each quarter. • Allow students to get help with their Algebra homework during small group instruction. • Weekly grades check and ALEKS progress reports. • Positive attitude. • Study hall day if student meets topics mastered goal over 2 week period of time.

  7. Grading • Computer Instruction (ALEKS) = 60% • Participation and weekly assessments • Topics Mastered • Small Group Instruction = 40% • Participation and occasional daily work grades

  9. Post ALEKS data MEAN MAP assessment score = 222 (+7 points from winter score) MEAN Algebra 1 grade = 81.2 (+5.9 points from 3rd quarter grade)
