  1. Sons of Liberty • Group of patriots that fought against British taxes and imposition. Led by Sam Adams. • Taxation of the colonies and military presence by the British • Boston Tea Party, burning of the HMS Gaspee. Increased colonial patriotism.

  2. Common Sense • Pamphlet published on January 10th, 1776 – Explained why colonies should declare independence • Thomas Paine’s desire for American Freedom • Very popular, read by many, sparked revolutionary ideas and patriotism

  3. Patriots and Loyalists • Patriots were people that wanted a new country. • Loyalists were loyal to Britain • Some people remained loyal to their English roots and did not mind British intervention in the colonies • Caused some struggle in the colonies about whether or not to fight for independence.

  4. First Continental Congress • Congress of 12 of 13 colonies in Philadelphia; September 1774 • Cause: Anger over the intolerable acts and to discuss colonial problems • Effect: Led to Second Continental Congress, where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

  5. Declaration of Independence • Official decree of independence from Great Britain. • Primarily written by Thomas Jefferson. • Adopted July 4th, 1776 • Caused by the desire to create a new nation and the war taking place. • Effect: Officially created the United States of America. Essentially it declared war on Great Britain. Allows you to have a bbq and fireworks in the summer. 
