  1. THE INTERNET & ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING • Organizations that are continually expanding their capacity to create their future. • Organization seeks not just an offer of training courses but rather to demonstrate a clear linkage between learning investment and business strategy, to create and maintain a knowledge creating and knowledge sharing culture. • People nowadays are very busy and time demanding, they need new tools to speed up their work, thus INTERNET is the best tool around. Web is becoming essential in the work of business and also becoming essential in the world of learning.

  2. TRANSFORMATION IN THE NEW ERA • In future the changes in society, business and technology will limit the impact of traditional training. Because of that reason we have to transform our perceptions of learning. • From training to performance • The first transformation is about outcomes. • The focus on the act of training (place, time and cost) is no longer adequate. • The focus will be on the workers performance that is beneficial. • Performance improvement strategy must be completed. (It encounters having the right tools, good working environment, adequate incentives and motivation)

  3. TRANSFORMATION IN THE NEW ERA 2. From the classroom to anytime ….. anywhere - The second transformation is about access - Distributed learners require delivery solutions that meet their needs and timeframes. - Learning should be available anywhere and anytime. - Learner want to learn according to their schedule and they want it to be fast. 3. From paper to online - Online revolution provides an extremely valuable capabilities such as updating content immediately and continuously. - Online resources, including learning materials can be kept fresh and relevant.

  4. TRANSFORMATION IN THE NEW ERA 4. From physical facilities to networked facilities. • No more classrooms • Linking up the facilities and people through the internet/intranet. • Build up the internal webs that carries corporate information and becoming the most important information highway. 5. From cycle time to real time • Speed is the defining characteristics of the digital world • Time have become a competitive asset. • So many things change very fast (technology & information) • Learning will be a continuous process, not only because the content is changing but the needs of learners are also constantly changing.

  5. WHY E-LEARNING • To find and obtain information and knowledge for specific reasons by learning the related field/area/topic (i.e. records mgmt, book-keeping, corporate mgmt, knowledge classification) • Learners reasons to learn are varied in the fulfillment of the personal/individual requirements (human needs) and organizational needs (decided by the management of their work places based on the strategic planning of the organizations). Furthermore in the present globalization era, people consider learning as part and parcel of their life in order to survive and compete in a challenging world beyond those differences in ages, ethnic groups, beliefs, customs, cultures and localities.

  6. WHY E-LEARNING • Distance – people are far away from the learning institutions. Thus constrains them to attend the traditional means of learning. • Space – they are frequently be on the move for outstation assignments. Thus a fixed learning space is not suitable for them. • Cost – traditional learning programs require students to pay the fixed fees every semester.

  7. WHY E-LEARNING • Ability to learn is increased by means of ICT – based learning system (i.e Web-based, video conferencing, audio conference) • It overcomes the limitation people had previously in their learning capacity due to several constraints such as :- • Time – nature of work at their work places does not permit them to enroll a structured or well-scheduled learning program.

  8. ROLES OF E-LEARNING Two main roles of e-learning: • Replace traditional learning (accessible) - e-learning in this role is a replacement to traditional learning. A learner may have access to classroom courses, but schedule, time, personal choice, etc. make e-learning more convenient…or the organization may find significant savings in moving the entire course online. • Extend learning (effective) - this role involves the addition of discussion forums/email/virtual presentations, software simulations, etc. to existing learning (currently blended is the word used to describe this role).

  9. ADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING • Flexibility, accessibility, convenience • Consistency of messages • Greater adaptability to learner’s needs • Inexpensive, world-wide distribution • Easy to update • Travel costs savings • Time savings • Reusability

  10. DISADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING • Bandwidth limitations • Learners with beginner-level computer skills find it to difficult to manage computer files • Requires a cultural change or mind shift in accepting the new learning method • Learners need to have discipline to work independently • Learners may feel isolated from the instructors • Some e-learning programs are too static and do not offer enough individual or collaborative interaction • Takes more time and more money to develop than face to face learning • Not all topics are delivered well by computer • Without the routine structures of a traditional class, learners may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines causing them to fail or do poorly
