Moraine Valley Community College • Located in the Southwest Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois • Established 1967 • Second largest community college in Illinois • Three campuses: Main campus in Palos Hills, Education Center in Blue Island, and Southwest Education Center in Tinley Park • Fall 2013 enrollment of approximately 18,000 students • Offer 100+ degree and certificate programs

  4. Academic Advising at Moraine Valley • 8 Full-time academic advisors • 12 Part-time academic advisors • Centralized advising services • Average 22,000 + student visits annually

  5. Background • Set a goal to establish a comprehensive advising model that would provide consistent information to all students and consider the needs of at risk students • Recognized benefit of sending a team to NACADA Summer Institute and requested Title III funding to attend • Developed outline for the Academic Advising syllabus during the Summer Institute • Brought draft back to campus to collaborate with the department staff

Mission Statement The mission statement of the Academic Advising Center at Moraine Valley Community College is to provide a quality advising experience in a learning centered environment that will prepare students to be active learners engaged in their educational and life goals while teaching them to become self-sufficient lifelong learners.

Why or why not? • 96% of respondents who answered question said “yes” • “Yes, it’s useful because it helps students with what’s going on” • “Yes, it helps to prepare us and get us to our goals” • “Yes, it helps me know what’s going on, let me know what I need” • “Yes, because it helps you to stay on track” • “Yes, it helps me with my studies” • “Yes, it is filled with a lot of good information” • “Yes, it gives students a better understanding of the college they are attending and what to look forward to” • “Yes, it tells about what the advisors do to help students and advise us on goals and about classes for the semester” • “Yes, it gives students an idea of what advisors do”
