  1. Fast Food What are the facts?

  2. History of Fast Food • White Castle was the first modern fast food chain in America (1921). • Drive In’s preceded Drive Thru’s. • McDonald’s is in 119 of the 196 countries in the world. There are more McDonald’s restaurants than any other chain. • In 1970, Americans spent 6 billion on fast food. Today we spend 150 billion. That is 50% of their annual food budget! • The average American eats fast food 5 times per week. • Fast food saves people time!

  3. More History! • When drive thru’s became increasingly popular in the 1990’s, automobile makers started installing cup holders in the consoles. As the serving sizes became bigger so did the cupholders.

  4. Questions: • How many of you eat fast food? • How often do you eat fast food? • What is your favorite fast food choice? • How is a restaurant classified as “fast food?”

  5. Is all fast food unhealthy?? • No • There are some options at fast food restaurants that can be healthy. • Is salad the only healthy choice? • No • Is a salad always healthy? • No • What makes a salad unhealthy? • Creamy dressings, cheese, bacon, fried meats

  6. What to look for on a menu • Sodium Content • Less than 480 milligrams for an item to be considered “healthy”. • Adults should consume less than 2300 milligrams per day. • Too much sodium intake can cause osteoporosis, high blood pressure, stroke, and kidney disease. • Fat Content • Daily consumption should be no more than 30% of daily calories. • For a 2000 calorie diet that would be around 66 grams of fat per day.

  7. Some Fat Is Good! • What are the benefits of fat? • Cushion and protect our organs • Give us energy • Vitamin absorption • What foods have healthy fats? • Nuts • Fish • Olive Oil

  8. Sugar • World Health Organization recently dropped it’s recommended daily allowance to 25 grams per day = 6 teaspoons for women. 9 teaspoons for men. It use to be 50 grams! • 1 12oz can of soda has 39 grams of sugar! This sugar is nothing but “empty calories”. • A 32oz soda has as much sugar as 11 Krispy Kreme donuts! • Too much sugar in the diet can lead to tooth decay, diabetes and weight gain. • Would it surprise you that McDonald’s supposedly healthy Fruit and Maple Oatmeal breakfast has 32 grams of sugar? • http://www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-lehighvalley/World-Health-Organization-issues-new-sugar-intake-guidelines/24830512

  9. Fast Food Facts: Portion Sizes Today 20 Years Ago How many calories are in today’s order of fries? 210 Calories 2.4 ounces 400 more calories! 610 Calories 6.9 ounces Adapted from http://hin.nhlbi.nih.gov/portion/keep.htm

  10. What is the quality of the food? McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets are made of: "Mechanically-separated meat" is a mixture created when the bones and carcass of a leftover chicken are mixed together in a food processor. Also known as “Pink Slime”. Back in 2011, Taco Bell came under fire over claims that its meat was only 36 percent beef. While the controversy has been cleared up and we now know that Taco Bell is serving meat, there's something weird about the fact that it gets delivered in plastic-wrapped sheets.

  11. Do you think the most popular foods at McDonalds, Wendys, etc are made of real food or is it food that is created in a lab? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoFpsUvaJlE • Have you ever had a potato that sat in your house too long? What happens? • What about a grilled hamburger patty?
