  2. Mapping the Earth

  3. GLOBE • A scale model of the Earth.

  4. GRID • Patterns of imaginary lines that circle the globe in east-west and north-south directions.

  5. Latitude • The distance north or south of Earth’s equator.

  6. Parallels • Lines of latitude

  7. EQUATOR • Imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South Poles.

  8. Degrees • Used to measure distance from the equator

  9. MINUTES • Degrees can be divided further • One degree equals 60 minutes

  10. LONGITUDE • Measures distance east and west of the prime meridian

  11. MERIDIANS • Lines of Longitude

  12. Prime Meridian • Imaginary line that divides the Earth into western and eastern hemispheres.

  13. Hemispheres • Divides the earth in half

  14. Continents • Earth’s land surface is divided into seven large landmasses.

  15. Islands • Land completely surrounded by water.

  17. MAP • Flat diagram of the Earth’s surface.

  18. Map Projections • Ways of showing the round earth on a flat surface.

  20. Title • Shows the subject of the map

  21. Compass Rose • Used to show directions on a map

  22. Bar Scale • Used to measure distance on a map

  23. Scale • The scale helps you measure the distance between two places. When you know the distance you can calculate how long the trip will take.

  24. Legend • Explains what the symbols on the map represent • Or Key

  25. Legend • Maps often have symbols to represent such features as highways, small roads, campgrounds, and rest areas. These symbols are listed in the legend.

  26. Locator Map • Shows where in the world the area on the map is located
