If not, what am I willing to trade? • Does this help me achieve my objectives? Does it have positive ROI? • May have to do it anyway, but at least take the time to think about whether you want to do it. • Determine if it’s a “smart” decision (worthwhile ROI). • Gracefully say “no”… • I refuse to give you less than my highest quality work, and I’m not in a place right now where I can devote the attention this task requires. Therefore, I’m going to have to say no this time. • …and suggest an alternative • You may want to try so-and-so. He/she has experience in this area / could provide a fresh perspective / would consider this a good development opportunity / etc.

Specific Tips – Time • Treat your own time as valuable • Block the time you need • Half a day (or a day?) per week for planning, brainstorming, volunteering—whatever energizes you • 8-9am as Tentative (daycare drop off) • Honor your days “off” • If it’s not a meeting you’d expect your boss to take on a Saturday, it’s not a meeting you should take on your family day • Don’t apologize or use family as an “excuse.” Simply say, “I have a conflict. Could we look for a more acceptable time that is suitable to everyone?” • Revisit your standards • Is 80% good enough? • Is this truly something ONLY you can do? Delegate!
