  1. Grab your journals! It’s time to set them up!

  2. Step 1 • Write your name and class period on the front, top, bottom, and side of the journal with a marker. • This will make finding your journal faster.

  3. Step 2 • Check to see how many pages your journal has and label the last page with that number. • If your book has 100 pages, number the last page “100”). • 2) Number 10 pages from the end. • Example= Pages 91 to 100 should be numbered if your book has 100 pages.

  4. Step 3 • On page 100 or last page, Write “Spelling Demons” at the top. • This section will be for words that you misspell this year. You will want to look up the correct way to spell the word before writing it in this section.

  5. Step 4 • On page 91 or 10 pages out, write “Writers’ Secrets” at the top.

  6. Step 5 • Leave the first page blank and then number 1-30 in the bottom right-hand corner.

  7. Step 6 • On the first blank page, write “Table of Contents” and set it up based on your journal. • Table of Contents • Writing pp. 1-90 • Writer’s Secrets pp. 91-99 • Spelling Demons p. 100

  8. Step 7 • Write the rules of the notebook. • Rules • Never tear out a page • 2. Only write on the right-hand pages. Keep left hand pages blank. • 3. Each entry should be dated on the top left and given a title.

  9. Step 8 • Glue the orange revision marks sheet to the front flap of your journal.

  10. Journal Entry 1 • Date the top of your page on the left-hand side. • Leave a space for a title. • First thought: • Describe a personal survival experience of yours or someone you know. • Follow-up Questions: What character trait(s) did the person you wrote about exhibit that helped them to survive? What types of various situations must people survive?

  11. On the Sticky Note • Write down 1 characteristic either you or the survivor you wrote about possesses that helped you or them survive.
