Grammar & Mechanics Indentation • Marks the start of a paragraph • On a keyboard, use the tab key • In editing, you may see the symbol: ¶ (hint to remember: it looks like a reverse P) Nouns • A part of speech made up of people, places, things, animals, and ideas • Two uses: • Countable: There were two apples in the bowl. • Those with an article in front of them: It was the last apple. or I thought it was an apple, but it was actually a peach.

Grammar & Mechanics Homophones • Words that sound alike, but that are spelled different and mean different things. • Examples: pear and pair; no and know; your and you’re End marks • Every complete sentence is punctuated with an end mark. These include periods (.), question marks (?), exclamation points (!). • When would you use the different kinds of end marks?

  8. fairy tales You may remember reading storybooks with illustrations to go along with the words. But what if we tried to do the reverse—writing a story based on pictures?

  9. fairy tales Try writing a story based on the images to the right, going from top to bottom. • Do you recognize the story? • Who are the characters? • What do you think is happening?

  10. Extra practice • Write down any new words you encounter this week, write down their definitions, and practice using them. • Write your own fairy tale or story. If you’re looking for ideas, consider basing it on a picture. • Keep an eye out for examples of indentation, nouns, end marks, and homophones.
