  1. North East Call to Action On Global Poverty and Climate Change (NE-CAP) A review of the past year for the Annual General Meeting March 4th 2013

  2. Who are we? An association of people who continue to promote the aims of the national MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign which formally disbanded in 2006.....

  3. NE-CAP is primarily a campaigning organisation, main issues being: • Trade justice • Dropping the debt • Providing more and better aid • Curbing climate change • Combating HIV/AIDS • Fair / transparent international tax practices • Promoting Fairtrade

  4. Remember, we are no longer called........

  5. But.........

  6. North East Call to Action On Global Poverty and Climate Change NE-CAP (It’s our second birthday!)

  7. Event highlights over the year

  8. March 12th 2012

  9. March 12th 2012 Delegates to the Liberal Democrat Spring Conference were surprised to be confronted, not with a demand for a change in policy, but with 'Drop the Debt' campaigners dressed as skeletons urging them to implement the policies they have already decided upon!

  10. March 12th 2012

  11. March 12th 2012 It’s official Liberal Democrat policy to "conduct our own audit of all UK government debts, ruling invalid any past lending that was recklessly given to dictators known not be committed to spend the loans on development". Jubilee Debt Campaign and NE-CAP are asking for just that!

  12. March – 3 new patrons Helen Goodman, Labour MP for Bishop Auckland and a Shadow Minister, says ... “I was thrilled to be asked to become a patron… NE-CAP has done sterling work.”

  13. March – 3 new patrons Rt Revd Justin Wilby, the Bishop of Durham... “I want to make clear my strong support for the issues and the remedies promoted by NE-CAP”.

  14. March – 3 new patrons John Grundy... “The world is so unfair. Everywhere we look the rich get richer while the poor continue to suffer… The rules are always twisted to favour those that already have. I hate that and I think it’s our human duty to try and redress the balance, to do what we can to push back a bit of the darkness. Supporting NE-CAP is a good way to do that.”

  15. March – Leveson Inquiry The Leveson Inquiry was set up as a result of the ‘phone hacking scandal, but its remit extended to investigate the ‘Culture, Practice and Ethics of the Press’. Dr David Golding CBE, NE-CAP’s Development Coordinator, made a major submission to the Inquiry. ..... “I contend that the behaviour of the press relating to some of the great issues of the day [aid, climate change, etc] not infrequently constitutes gross professional misconduct, by involving blatant distortion of the facts and demonstrating utter contempt for the responsibility to provide well informed and balanced treatment…”

  16. March – Debt Relief Video • In 2011, David Golding, Development Co-ordinator of NE-CAP visited Tanzania and Zambia. A video of this trip was published in March 2012 where he sees for himself, and shares with us, the benefits of debt cancellation. This is a great illustration of how campaigning really does make a difference. To view, Google....... ‘Drop the Debt! 22. Saturday September 15th On the day before the great north run there was a gathering for GNR runners, campaigners, invited dignitaries and the general public to hear about the achievements and challenges of the poverty campaign. Keynote Speaker, Nick Dearden, Jubilee Debt Campaign's Director, spoke on the Campaign's current emphasis which now is on 'justice' and on conducting an honest audit of debts owed to the UK by poor countries, to determine which of them are unjust

  23. Some of the dignitaries...

  24. September 16th - Great North Run Yet again we had a large number of people who ran for various organisations affiliated to NE-CAP.

  25. September 16th - Great North Run The team is organised by Jubilee Debt Campaign at Newcastle University, in association with NE-CAP • It raised £11,350 in 2012 Bringing the total raised to over • £142,000 since 2002! It’s a JDC team, but they ‘allow’ us to give away 10% of the funds raised to Stop AIDS Campaign and 40% to UK aid agencies for their work with HIV and AIDS orphans. Each runner can choose his/her agency

  26. October – Tax bus Christian Aid's tax justice campaign has highlighted how developing countries lose $160bn every year - one-and-a-half-times what they receive in international aid - thanks to loopholes in the global financial system. People were invited to come aboard the ‘Tax Justice Bus’ as it travelled in the North East as part of a national tour to learn more. Sponsored by Christian Aid, Church Action against Poverty and NE-CAP.

  27. The tax bus went all over UK

  29. November – paper chain A giant paper chain was taken to Parliament by Canon Graham Usher and Pat Griffiths from Hexham Abbey, Guy Opperman, MP for Hexham, Tim Jones from Jubilee Debt Campaign and Dr David Golding CBE from NECAP.

  30. November – paper chain The paper chain was part of a nationwide petition to the Prime Minister organised by Jubilee Debt Campaign. The chain measured over 130 metres long, and was joined with other chains from across the country.
