  2. Background • Your decisions to strike the Government has failed, which is known as the July Days incident. • Many of your trusted members were arrested • You have no choice but to hide from the Government • Bolshevik influence and power has declined • What would you do?

  3. Scenario 1 • You have just returned from exile shortly after the February Revolution. The Provisional Government is clearly in power and many parties are joining to form the coalition government. What would you do? • Join the coalition government • Patiently wait for the right moment to strike

  4. Wrong decision • The coalition government has failed to fulfill their promises and the people are suffering • The people start to withdraw their support for you, and are throwing their support for left wing parties. Back to scenario 1

  5. Right decision • The Provisional Government has failed to fulfill their promises • People are withdrawing support for them and are throwing support for opposition parties • They have identified the Bolsheviks as the main opposition right from the start since you rejected to join the Government • Bolsheviks are gaining support To scenario 2

  6. Scenario 2 • Kornilov has just attempted a coup. Kerensky is now pleading for help. You know that you are against the Provisional Government. What would you do? • Let Kornilov take down the Government • Send your troops to destroy Kornilov’s army • Negotiate with Kornilov’s troops and ask them to stop

  7. Wrong decision • You have eliminated Kornilov’s army and Kornilov was destroyed • However, you have suffered major casualties and lost the support of the Soviets Back to the scenario

  8. Wrong decision • Kornilov has taken over the government • Many right wing officers are regaining power and are reinstating the old bourgeois government • The efforts of the February revolution has gone to waste and your plan to take over Russia failed • Back to Scenario 2

Right decision • Many of Kornilov’s soldiers were supporters of the Bolsheviks • Negotiating with them ensured a peaceful way of defeating the coup and little bloodshed • Meanwhile, Kornilov would be stripped of his power and can be easily arrested • Your decision has earned the support of the people for defending against people who wanted to reinstate the old bourgeois government, and at the same time portray that the government is helpless. To scenario 3

  10. Scenario 3 • You now have the support of the people. Now you need to retain the support through propaganda. What would you do? • Address the main problems of the people and promise to solve them • Sit back and relax – you already have their support • Come out with solutions and help the Government resolve their problems

  11. Wrong decision • Although you have gained support by helping the people, you have not achieved your goal in putting the Bolsheviks in power

  12. Wrong decision • Your inability to take action has been met with negative responses by the people • The people feel that you are unable to help them and turned their support for other left wing parties Back to scenario 3

  13. Right decision • You decided to play on the people’s feelings by addressing their needs. But what slogan should you use which can effective summarize their problems? • “Unity, Food, Freedom” • “Peace, Bread, Land” • “Rations, Space, Communism” The Answer

  14. WHICH SLOGAN? • “Peace, Bread, Land” is the slogan which Lenin used • The people threw their support for you, and many supporters of other parties defected to your cause. Even Trotsky a member of the Mensheviks joined your party. To Revolution!

Revolution! • You now have the support of the people and is confident about starting a revolution • During Nov 6, your Red Guards took control of post offices, bridges and the State Bank • You now have control over most of Petrograd • Throughout the day, your Red Guards continued to take over important locations, and even the Winter Palace with little or no opposition. • Congratulations! YOU ARE IN POWER!
