  2. What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is to use the wordsorideasof others without giving them proper credit for it. Proper credit? Find out what citation style you’re supposed to use (MLA, APA, etc.) and follow it to a tee. More information on plagiarism. Back to Seema’s Web Page

  3. Ways to Avoid Plagiarism • Quote your sources accurately. • Paraphrase carefully, making sure not to use the unique words or sentence structures of others. • Cite every sentence that contains the quoted words or paraphrased ideas of others. Back to Seema’s Web Page

  4. Bernie the Alligator I’m a plagiarist! Bernie the alligator downloaded part of his paper off the Internet last night. He knows he’s a plagiarist. This can be a tempting last resort, but the consequences aren’t worth it. If you’re tempted to plagiarize because your assignment is too hard, talk to your teacher or the Writing Lab for help. 5. Harry the Panda Harry the Panda doesn’t know he’s a plagiarist, but he accidentally plagiarized part of his paper. He didn’t realize that he had paraphrased wrong. But unfortunately, Harry will still have to face the consequences (and he probably won’t get to play as much Ping Pong). I’m not a plagiarist. The Original Passage: “Panda bearsareindigenous tothe Far East, and are a favoritein Western zoos.”—from Frank Zappa, Page 398. Harry’s Paraphrase: Pandasarenative toplaces like China, and are lovedin American zoos (Zappa 398). Harry used his own words, but the same sentence structure. See it? Back to Seema’s Web Page

  6. Too bad Hedwig didn’t double-check the quotations he used in his paper. He doesn’t know he’s a plagiarist, but he’s about to get a rude awakening. (Get it—awakening? And he’s an owl?) Hedwig the Owl I’m not a plagiarist. Original Passage: “The owl is a nocturnal animal who secretly loves to jump rope.”—from Iggy Pop, page 45. Hedwig’s quote: According to Pop, “The owl is a noctrunal animal who secretly loves jumping rope” (54). Back to Seema’s Web Page

  7. Don’t be like these animals. Just say “NO” to plagiarism: • Give yourself plenty of time to revise. • Double-check your paraphrases and quotes. • Don’t resort to downloading papers off the Internet (it’s still plagiarism if you change the words). Back to Seema’s Web Page
