8. 2 Responses as seen on Facebook Bilz I don't think it's a bad idea to give women the power to prevent rape. There are definitely some places, especially if girls are travelling where an extra safety precaution would be a really good idea. Gentle There are many major things that contribute to rape culture. The three most distinguishable ones being rape myths, victim blaming, and misogyny/patriarchal world view. Some of these are either directly a cause of rape culture but also feed into rape culture as well. Kind of like fueling your own fire. This invention is problematic because it negatively reinforced rape myths. The example in the article it talks about going out at night etc. This reinforces the myth that rape happens in a dark alley way somewhere by someone you don't know and that this rapist murderer guy is looking for a girl who he has easy access to. Situations like this do happen, but way less than we may believe. In most situations a person will be raped by someone they know and have known for a while. What is a pair of shorts going to help in this common situation? In that example we have reinforced slut shaming (easy access and what rapists look for) and we have created a false image of who a rapist is. This also encourages victim blaming. Its saying that the responsibility is on women to protect themselves. I don't find it empowering personally. I also don't see how any male would find this empowering either. Also Bilz. Women should not HAVE to be given the power to prevent rape especially if its false. Rapists cause rape. Not what you're wearing, not whatever else. Rapists. I conclude this article however I do see where you are both coming from.
