Characterization of the Unit • Main objectives: • To do R&D in Signal Processing with Application in Electronic and Information Systems; • To promote scientific progress of the personel and supervise under graduate and post-graduate students • To make organizational advances to strengthen and develop the existing infra-structures, physical spaces and resources • To cooperate with other laboratories, enterprises and networks for the realization of R&D projects and publications.

Characterization of the Unit • Scientific background • In January 1994, 2 PhDs0,1, + 2 PhD students2,3 + several graduate members. • In December 2001, 3 PhDs1,2,3 + 5 PhD students5,6,7,8,9 + 8 MSc students10,11,12,13,14,16,19,20. • R&D in the period 1995-2001 was in Speech Processing and System Identification and Modeling • Speech Processing: • 1 PhD thesis, 1 PhD student, 5 MSc thesis, 3 MSc students + several undergraduates. • Signals and System Modeling through Identification: • 2 PhDs + 4 PhD Students + 4 MSc students.

Characterization of the Unit • R&D Objectives, Areas and Status: Objectives: • Develop R&D in basilar areas of DSP • Promote application projects as a method of experimenting and designing conceptually new solutions through: • Use of identification techniques • Parametric Modeling and Control techniques • Multi-streaming techniques • Advanced programming techniques

Characterization of the Unit • R&D Objectives, Areas and Status(cont.) : • Area 1: System Identification and Analysis • Background Academic results: 1 PhD completed2, 5 PhD on-going5,7,8,9,28, 5 MSc completed5,7,9,29,31, 2 MSc on-going11,13,; • Applications: • Transfer functions in electronic and electro-acoustic systems • Analysis and synthesis of acoustic noise effects over living organisms • Instrumentation for weight measurement • Main results already obtained: • Parametric and non-parametric techniques for analysis and equalization of electro-acoustic transfer functions (pulse and TDS); • Parametric identification methods for induction motors; • Parametric advanced control system for induction motors; • Ultrasonic obstacle detector (beamforming with DSP). A key feature of the facility is an integrated instrumentation system in which test rigs measurements are fed to a central computer, here the measurements are digitized, recorded and post-processed. Topics:- Instrumented motor drive test bed up to 3 kW- integrated  computer based instrumentation;- DSP plataform based on Dspace board- Simulation Softwares (Matlab/Simulink and Saber)

Research and Development plan • Signals and Systems Modeling through Identification: • Years 1, 2 and 3: • Induction motor modeling: • Consolidate, refine and extend the parametric identification techniques, Kalman filtering and bilinear transformation • Other types of motors (hysteresis motor , etc) • Refine DSP application with dSpace boards • Build an electronic power converter to allow the efficient control with the parametric modeling and sliding-mode control, bond-graph techniques • Apply to electric motor drives in electric vehicles situations of manouvrability and efficiency demands • Electronic and electro-acoustic systems modeling and compensation: • Continue the developmento of electronic systems identification algorythms • Continue the development of electro-acoustic transfer function modeling and compensation (inverse filtering) with Kautz filters and IIR filters. • Continue research about TDS methodologies

Research and Development plan • General: • Years 1, 2 and 3: • Conclusion of 4 PHD Thesis in 2004. • Publication of results of PhD thesis in International reviews. • Collaboration in the organization of Eurospeech’05 that will be well in Lisbon. • Candidature of organizations of a “satellite event” of Eurospeech’05 to be well in Porto. • Leadership of the candidature to a COST Action successor to the COST 258 (already jointly planed with more than 20 Europeans research units). • Develop the internal cohesion through collaborative platform and exchange initiatives.
