  3. The Truth: • Senior year is the best! • However, it also comes with a great deal of stress.

  4. So why am I here? To help you make senior year the best and least stress free possible.

  5. What do you want to be/do when you grow up? • Time is ticking…

  6. WHAT IS BEST FOR ME? • Military? What do I know about it? From whom? What else do I want to know? • Community College – a place to make decisions, a way to save money, a transitional phase – Is this a place for me to start? • Work? Do I want to try a job and search for a career I want? How? Where? What kind of job? • University? Am I ready to head off to a four year college? Do I have some ideas of what I want to study? How do I decide which school suits me?

  7. What do I want to BE when … • What am I good at? • How do I want to spend my time? • What careers do I know I do not want to pursue? • What careers have I thought about? • What careers are growing? • What do other people think I might be good at? • What careers might be emerging?

  8. PLAN • Michigangap - Career Search • College Board • Michigan and state web sites • Military • Businesses • Try career search • Look up careers of interest • Consider volunteer opportunities (Americorps, City Year) • Look at colleges and college program • Keep options open

  12. OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND • Would you like to spend a year studying in another country? • Would you like to work on real world problems solving, like the oil spill? • Would you like to work at a bank or manufacturing firm while you attend school? LOOK INTO YOUR OPTIONS

  15. Begin Deciding YOUR Future! • You are making some choices – planning a journey. • Enjoy the process. • Don’t stress over the process. • Be REALLY honest with yourself. • Be ready to confidently step into the direction of your future.

Top 5 College Search Tips from Class of 2014 • Apply early • Apply everywhere – keep options open – even out of state – sometimes more scholarships – Dream - Possibilities • Visit – make sure you can call it home • Write down application deadlines – Keep a folder • Apply for scholarships – they are a pain – but helpful – small ones add up

Additional Advice for College Search/Applications • Have teachers proofread your essays • Be realistic with what you need –Think about your interests • Don’t procrastinate • Okay to be undecided • Contact about references/recommendations ahead • Community College is a good option – don’t discount • Don’t be afraid to brag about yourself • Service, commitments, involvements do matter, get involved • Gap year • Take the SAT • Don’t feel pressured to go to an expensive school • Keep your grades up – all of them • Seek advice – parents, friends, counselors, parents of friends, perfect strangers – carefully

Advice from Class of 2013 Decisions Applications/Scholarships • Don’t stress – this is exciting, it is all about you - enjoy it. • Talk to everyone – parents, counselors, bosses, teachers, neighbors • Think about what you are good at – really be honest • Meet with counselors • Save money • Apply everywhere – apply early • Don’t put off applications – do as soon as possible • Ask teachers for help with essays • Ask staff for recommendations early • Fill out as many scholarships as you can – you never know • Visit the campus

Top Advice from the Class of 2012 • Choose well and do well in your chosen activities – fulfill your commitments • It is okay to say no – you do not have to do EVERYTHING • Apply yourself all year! • Wish I would have stayed in ______ (know why you are giving up something and be sure it is for the right reasons) • Use your resources – teachers, counselors, parents, former students, community members • Visit – it is okay to do so more than once • Research the colleges – don’t just go with what you know • Consider all options –apply to many places *****
