  2. Objectives • Upon completion of this chapter, you should be able to: • Describe the importance of taping and wrapping in athletics • Describe the common supplies used in taping and wrapping • Perform the basic taping and wrapping techniques described in this chapter

  3. Taping and Wrapping in Prevention and Treatment • Prevention • Used for additional protection • Treatment • Used for new and healing injuries • Prior evaluation provides information to guide in selection • Primary purpose • Additional support, stability, and compression

  4. Supplies Commonly Used in Taping • Adhesive athletic tape • Most commonly used is one and a half inches wide and 15 feet long • Hypoallergenic • Cotton-backed with an adhesive designed to withstand temperature changes • Torn easily if it is held firmly on each side and pulled away at an angle

  5. Supplies Commonly Used in Taping (cont’d.) • Tape underwrap • Helps eliminate irritation from repeated taping • Made of a light foam • Typically two and three quarter inches wide by 30 yards long • Promotes comfort

  6. Supplies Commonly Used in Taping (cont’d.) • Spray adherent • Helps adhesive tape or underwrap adhere • The less the tape slips, the more protection and less chafing

  7. Supplies Commonly Used in Taping (cont’d.) • Heel and lace pads • Help prevent pinching and blistering in friction-prone areas • Tape removal tools • Specialized scissors or tape-cutting devices • Designed to slip under tape and underwrap, and quickly slice through it with no irritation

  8. Prophylactic Taping of the Ankle • Most common use for athletic tape • Before ankle is taped, athlete’s foot should be checked for: • Blisters • Abrasions • Cuts • Athlete’s foot (fungal infections)

  13. Compression Wrap of the Ankle • Used to control swelling and inflammation

  14. Low-Dye Taping • Improves foot biomechanics • Keeps athlete from overpronating

  16. Turf-Toe Taping • Shoe grips hard on surface and sticks • Causes body weight to go forward and bend the toe upward
