Pine Ridge Reservation - 2010 • Unemployment Rate: 80 percent • High school dropout rate: 50 percent • Life Expectancy: • Women: 52 years • Men: 48 years • Nearly 12% of deaths are alcohol related • Death rates for those suffering “severe poverty” are 533 percent higher than non Indian counterparts

  7. Chances of being a victim of a violent crime: • 124:1000 Native Americans are victims • 49:1000 whites • 61:1000 blacks • 29:1000 Asians The rate of violent crime against NA women was 50% higher than violent crime committed against African American men

  8. HOWEVER: Perpetrators were mostly white: • 60% of the perpetrators of crimes against NAs were white • 29% other NAs • 10% were black or Latino

  9. CONTRAST WITH: • 69% of those committing violent crimes against whites were white • 81% of those committing violent crimes against blacks were black • 82% of people committing violent crimes against Latinos are Latino
