CHDS – Who We Are • Mission is to strengthen national security through education • Established in 2002 / Funded by the Department of Homeland Security • Provide a neutral educational forum for leaders to come together in an intergovernmental multi-disciplinary group to discuss and debate HS; help kick-start the academic discipline of HS • Programs include a Master’s Degree; Executive Leadership Program; Mobile Education Teams; • University Partnership – provide all educational materials at no cost • Supported the Development of 200-plus programs around the nation

Homeland Security Education • Academia has a history of supporting national efforts • WWII – Manhattan Project • Cold War – National Security Affairs, Area Studies, Language Programs • New agencies and policies spawned academic requirement and action • No HLS/HLD Academic Programs Prior to 9/11 – but fastest growing area in academia since: • Associates Degrees – 45 • Bachelors Degrees – 58 • Masters Degrees – 70 • Certificate Programs – 150 Total – 323 (approximately)

  5. Growth • The enrollments in our programs are growing quickly such that we are scrambling to find enough adjunct professors to cover all our courses. Our fully online MS in SSEM is growing at about 200% a year by itself. Homeland Security Education - Key Issues • Homeland Security education is growing and gaining legitimacy • Hard to bracket – what does HS exclude? • Most programs are grassroots efforts – not top down directed • Degree name not necessarily indicative of underlying courses • Programs that pre-existed 9/11 have subsequently been renamed homeland security (Nexus to homeland security is suspect in some cases) • Quick growth has resulted in wide range of quality – accreditation should help • Qualified faculty an issue – many NPS alums now teaching
