  1. Advanced Learning Schools PYP Exhibition 2009-2010 Christelle Thompson PYP Coordinator

  2. Agenda Introduction/Purpose of Exhibition Organization and Expectations Research /Written Products Technology Mentors Q & A

  3. Why do we spend time on this? • As an authorized PYP school, we agree to the principles and practices of the programme. The exhibition is one of those. • Exhibition contributes to the development of a continuum of learning experiences and leads to the development of advanced-level products and/or performances.

  4. What is our purpose? The PYP exhibition has a number of key purposes for the students: • To engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry • To demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning • To explore multiple perspectives • To synthesize and apply their learning • To provide an authentic process for assessing student understanding • To take action as a result of their learning • To celebrate the transition of learners from primary to middle and later high school

  5. What do we want to learn? The PYP Exhibition reflects all the major features of the programme. • Opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the Learner Profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP • It incorporates all the key concepts and the transdisciplinary skills: social, research, thinking, communication and self-management • It offers opportunities for students to display attitudes that relate to people, the environment and their learning; these attitudes should be evident throughout the process

  6. What do we want to learn? • It provides opportunities for students to engage in action; students should demonstrate an ability to reflect on and apply their learning to choose appropriate courses of action and carry them out • In all, the Exhibition will be a culmination of all of the essential elements of the PYP • It also includes ongoing assessment of the exhibition process; teachers will look for each individual student’s contribution to and understanding of the exhibition and, a summative assessment and reflection on the event itself.

  7. The Basics • The students will be grouped according to a topic for which they expressed interest. • This year’s topics are all based around the central idea: Sustainable use of resources provides opportunities for future generations.

  8. Organization/Expectations • Expectations • Timeline • Organizational Tools • Daily Responsibilities

  9. Research • Note-Taking Tool • Source Citation • PowerPoint/Technology • Organization Skills

  10. Writing • Students will write about their topic and will later write a complete report highlighting the outcome of their inquiry into that particular topic. • Teachers will help facilitate the choice and expose students to many different types of writing. • Rubrics will be given ahead of time so that students will know what the expectations are.

  11. Technology • Groups will work together to add a technology component to their exhibition project. • Students groups will be encouraged to think about the strengths of the group members when creating their presentations. • The teachers will work closely with the students to help troubleshoot.

  12. Action • Students will be asked to determine appropriate action to be taken based on the knowledge gained during this research process. • The action should be something that the students can accomplish on their own, and should be meaningful to themselves and the community. • We encourage parents to talk their student about possibilities for action.

  13. What is my role as a parent? You are your child’s biggest cheerleader! Exhibition can be stressful, especially when we are down to the wire. Most of the work will be done at school, but it is important for you to be knowledgeable about what the students are doing and how they are feeling. Ask questions and make sure they know that you will support them in any way you can. If your child shares concerns with you that you feel need to be communicated to us, please contact your homeroom teacher or myself! We want this process to be very meaningful for everyone!

  14. Exhibition • ALS Exhibition Log will help students with organizing and self- management skills. • Deadlines all clearly indicated • Log for the whole process of the Exhibition
