  15. Social Worker, Field Setting • Job description • Field social work is a broad term referring to social workers whose clients live in the community (the ‘field’) as opposed to residential homes. Clients mainly come from disadvantaged groups - older people, disabled people, those with mental health problems, families trapped in poverty. The problems the clients face are often financial, eg inability to stretch their budget to cover all their expenses. • Many face difficulties in family relationships, such as parents unable to control their children. There are children suffering abuse - physical, sexual, by starvation or neglect - with all its psycho-emotional complexities. In other cases, a ‘carer’ may no longer feel able to cope with the physical and emotional demands of looking after a sick or elderly member of the family.

Idnetifying and organising available resources. Working with other professionals to receive advice/ opinions. Attending court cases to present client reports. Assessing the levels of need for clients. Writing reports. Budgeting.

Social Worker, Residential Setting • Job description • Manages the welfare of residents in homes of all types and sizes for children, adults or older people with a range of physical or emotional needs. May provide physical care, individual counselling, teaching and group therapy. • Typical work activities • Advising residents, liaising with their families, social workers and other agencies. Writing medical, court or adoption reports. Assessing residents’ needs and porgress. Leading social activities. Helping residents deal with problems and perhaps make the transition to independence. Responsibility for day to day management, including staff and finance, comes with experience.

Aims to help communities improve the quality of their lives. • Typical work activities • Working with community groups providing a range of activities. Setting up new services by liaison with interested groups. Recruiting and training paid and voluntary staff. Attending meetings and presenting verbal and written reports. Handling financial management of a limited budget and fundraising. Acting as a facilitator to promote self-help in the community.

Maybe there are problems within the family, perhaps the child has an unidentified health or psychological problem, possibly he or she fears being bullied, feels unable to cope with the school work, is perhaps working illegally or is needed at home to look after other younger children. • Typical work activities • Specialises in work with pupils. Diagnosing. Supporting. Supervising. Advising pupils and parents. Frequent contact with schools over pupils with attendance or behavioural problems, assessing children with special needs. Liaison and referral with other agencies. Writing case reports.

Supports individuals and families, marshalling resources to help them make required adjustments and cope more effectively. • Typical work activities • Working with clients and other professionals to identify and assess personal, emotional and financial problems etc. Arranging practical help, advice and giving support to people with emotional difficulties, helping people manage and come to terms with traumas of adjustment to, eg change in lifestyle or terminal illness. Possibly investigating cases of child abuse.
