  2. Course Aim To provide an integrated & systematic approach to training & education of RN’s working on a regular basis with patients who have cancer

  3. Educational Aims The course aims to enable nurses to: • Confidently and competently asess, plan, manage & evaluate care of patients with cancer • Challenge existing practice • Demonstrate self awareness through the development of skills of critical thinking, problem solving & reflection • Work collaboratively with other health care practitioners through increased awareness of roles & contributions to care • Demonstrate an understanding of personal needs for support & development of self & colleagues

  4. Modules Three modules • Treatment modalities in Cancer Care (5 days) • Supportive Care & Symptom Management (5 days) • Science of Cancer (3days + 3 days self directed learning)

  5. Learning Methods • Theoretical sessions • Clinical practice at ward level • Role models • Case studies • Worksheets • Critical incident analysis • Reflection on practice • Learning contracts / clinical competencies • Formal written work

  6. Clinical Competencies • 20 competencies • 16 to be achieved over 12 months Examples: • Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs & Waste • Preliminary Assessment & Pain Management in Patients with Cancer

  7. Course Options • Clinical Competency Portfolio • Attendance Certificate • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) • Academic Credits

  9. Progress to Date • 1st cohort (SOS staff only) completed 3 modules in Oct. 2004 – Sept. 2005 (n = 11) • 2nd Cohort (SOS & WoS) commenced in April 2005 (n = 15) • 3rd Cohort (SOS & WoS) commenced in October 2005 (n = 11)

Future Plans • Further develop the clinical competency portfolio to include other aspects of cancer care. • Develop E-learning options within the course. • Further develop mentorship training & support & the learning environment. • Widen scope for course participants. • To develop links with cancer education at the advanced practice level.
