  10. Overview • “Houston Hide from the Wind” is a website for residents to learn about their wind risk for a given hurricane or tropical storm • www.houstonhidefromthewind.org

  11. Why do we need this? • Hurricane Rita: More people from our region evacuated than were required, and we needed more ways to educate them about the most significant risks. Officials now encourage residents and visitors to "run from the water and hide from the wind"

  12. Zip Code-Based Evacuation

  13. A tool for the public… • To allow residents to observe projected wind speeds in their zip code for a forecast storm and also look at actual wind speeds from past storms • To see official postings of evacuation orders, with the time and date the evacuation was ordered (for the current storm only)

  14. Original Site RIP (2006 – 2012) City of Houston Only Clunky interface Limited linkage to other preparedness and storm information Instead of “no storm,” it would show the most recent storm information
