  1. “What skills and dispositions must an effective leader have in a world of entrenched and competing political philosophies?” Educational Policy Fellowship Program Group: Sue Charette, Pamela Collins, Cheryl L. Poole, Michael Radke, Karen R. Todorov, and Vanessa Winborne

  2. National Values Our nation was built on the complementary democratic values of diversity and liberty. Inherent in these foundational values is the recognition that differences are not only regarded but considered to be valuable and have historically contributed to the strength and greatness of our nation.

  3. Today… Americans believe that now more than ever our thoughts, actions, and associations are “polarized.”

  4. “Connections” outlined three problem areas • Polarization that paralyzes legislative bodies, • The persistence of “wicked problems”, • The increasing distance between the “experts” and the citizen’s perception of problems.

  5. Today’s Goals • Consider the Hollister strategies in the light of the challenges to leadership in an atmosphere of heightened polarization using the reflections of Representative Steve Tobocman

  6. And second, 2.Examine the dynamic of power as the invisible participant in all group interactions

  7. And finally, 3. Recognize what personal power we each have as leaders that can help us maneuver in an atmosphere of polarization.
