  1. Back to School Night • Honors Chemistry • Stacey Gould

Course Content • Textbook:Chemistry (Prentice Hall) Matter, Energy and Change Atomic Structure/Theory Measurement/Problem Solving Periodic Law Chemical Formulas/Naming Bonding Stoichiometry Thermodynamics Solids, Liquids, and Gases Solutions and other Mixtures Reaction Rates/Equilibrium Acids and Bases Kinetics Chemical Equations Oxidation/Reduction Electrochemistry

  3. Honors Chemistry • Typical Class • Starts with preview or review questions • Introduce Concept • Skill: Guided Practice • Practice / Work time (one on one help) • Review Concept and Student Questions • Hands-on activities and labs are incorporated whenever possible

  4. Coursework and Assessments • Homework is given at the start of each chapter, and is due the day before the test. • Quizzes within the chapter for most topics • Tests occur at the end of each chapter • Laboratory activities occur within most chapters • Final Exam is given at the end of the year and is cumulative.

  5. Return of Assessments • Quizzes and tests are returned to students within 1 – 2 days. • Correct answers are provided in class • Test Corrections = better understanding • District Assessments will not be returned to students as per department policy (ex: final exam)

  6. Reporting Progress • Grades are entered and published in HAC for parents and students to view. • Formal progress reports are issued eight times during the school year; four interim reports and four report cards • Please contact me any time regarding your child’s progress in chemistry.

  7. Clinic • Extra help is available Tuesday – Thursday after school. • Students should attend clinic as soon as they know they are struggling with a concept or skill. • The day before a test or quiz is often crowded and provides little opportunity for individual attention. It is best to attend clinic on a regular basis to receive extra help.

  8. Tips and suggestions • Chemistry is cumulative • concepts introduced in the first marking period will be used throughout the year. • Students should invest 20 minutes per night on chemistry. If there is no formal homework assignment, students should review class notes and assignments, and keep up with the chapter homework • Keeping up with the material is the key to a successful year!

  9. Science Fair and SAT II • Please take a handout describing the opportunities for participation in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and/or Intel Science fairs this year. • SAT II subject area exam is offered in June. We provide the prep clinics starting in March. Free and after school
