CONFLICT. Do Now:. Think of 1-3 stories, novels, or movies and try to identify the problem in each. Please write down the problem for each. What is conflict?. The struggle between two people or opposing forces in literature. The plot is formed around the conflict of the story.

  2. Do Now: Think of 1-3 stories, novels, or movies and try to identify the problem in each. Please write down the problem for each.

  3. What is conflict? • The struggle between two people or opposing forces in literature. • The plot is formed around the conflict of the story.

  4. Different types of conflict that exists within literature: • Character vs. Character- a conflict that exists between two characters in a story. This conflict will be between the protagonist (hero) and your antagonist (villain).

  5. Character vs. self- a struggle that takes place within the character and him/herself. • This is also referred to as an INTERNAL CONFLICT. • Examples might include a character having to make a difficult decision, succumbing to peer pressure, etc…

  6. Character vs. Nature- a character is faced with overcoming and surviving the power & challenges of nature and the outside world.

  7. Character vs. Society- often times in literature our main character or protagonist will not only struggle solely with another character, but the prejudices, discrimination and beliefs of a whole society.

  8. Character vs. the supernatural- Sometimes in literature our main character is pinned against forces that are beyond our worldly understanding and control.

  9. Character vs. circumstance-- sometimes in a story the main character is faced with unfortunate and challenging situations that are out of their control. • Ex. The Fault In Our Stars • The Pursuit of Happiness

  10. One or more forms of a conflict will exist in every story, novel and movie. • TRY TO IDENTIFY THE CONFLICT IN THE NEXT BOOK YOU READ AND MOVIE YOU SEE… • It’s there, you just have to find it…
