  1. The Skeletal System

  2. The skeleton has five major functions: • Shape and support • Movement • Protection of internal organs • Production of blood cells • Storage of vitamins and minerals

  3. The backbone or vertebral column is the center of the skeleton.

  4. The backbone is made up of 26 small bones called vertebrae.

  5. Parts of the Bone • Compact Bone • Spongy Bone • Bone Marrow • Outer Membrane • (Periosteum)

  6. The spaces in bone contain a soft connective tissue called marrow. The job of the bone marrow is to make blood cells.

  7. Cartilage is a connective tissue that is more flexible than bone.

  8. A joint is a place in the body where two bones come together.

  9. Immovable joints connect bones in a way that allow little or no movement.

  10. Moveable joints allow the body to make a wide range of movement.

  11. There are 4 types of moveable joints: Ball-and-socket Hinge Gliding Pivot

  12. The bones in movable joints are held together by a strong connective tissue called ligaments.

  13. 31. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the body’s bones become weak and break easily.
