  1. Ionic and Covalent Bonding Lindsay Neff & Aly Leyo

  2. Ionic vs Covalent Compounds Covalent Compound- A compound where atoms share their electrons Ionic Compound- A compound where two or more ions are heldtogether by electric attraction.

  3. Characteristics of Covalent Compounds • Bonds betweennon-metals • Lowmelting and boiling points • Soft and squishycompared to ionic compounds • Veryflammable • Do not conductelctricityunderwater • Usuallyaren’tvery soluble in water

  4. How Covalent Compounds are formed They are formed by the attractive and repulsive forces thatexistbetweentwoatoms The valence electrons are sharedbetween the elementssotheycan have a full octet Energyisreleasedwhe bond isformed

  5. Example of Covalent Bonding

  6. Naming Covalent Compounds • The First element named is usually the first one written in the formula, or the less electronegative element • The second element written is the more electronegative one and –ide is put on the end of it • The names must be distinguished by prefix’s because different molecules are made of the same elements

  7. Writing Covalent Compounds • To write the Covalent Compounds as their symbols you have to count how many atoms of each element you have. • EX. Nitrogen +Nitrogen + Oxygen +Oxygen = N2O2 • Dinitrogen Dioxide

  8. Naming Covalent Compounds

  9. Characteristics of Ionic Compounds • Bonds betweenmetals and non-metals • All Ionic compounds formcrystals • Have highmelting and boiling points • Very hard and brittle • Conductelectricitywhethey dissolve in water

  10. NamingIonic Compounds Ions borrow their names from the names of the elements. When an element forms 2 or more ions, the ion names include roman numerals to indicate charge. When naming binary Ionic Compounds the name of the cation is followed by the anion

  11. NamingIonic Compounds Example of naming simple ions- Cu2+= Copper(II) ion Example of naming binary ions- ZnS= Zinc Sulfide

  12. WritingIonic Compounds

  13. Example of IonicBonding
