Mission Statement • To assist in the location and recovery of missing children and reunite them with their legal parent or guardian. • To increase awareness about the issues surrounding missing and exploited children. • To educate the public on ways to prevent abduction. • To provide assistance and support to families affected by the trauma of a missing child. • To refer parents to support/professional services. • To advocate for the rights of children.

  6. New Media Risks • With new media comes new risks: • Cyber-Bullying • Sexting • Cyber-Luring

  7. Sexting

  8. Sexting • Sending nude or semi-nude pictures to one another on mobile phones. • For the most part these images are sent to the persons boyfriend or girlfriend. • However, there are several documented reports of teens sending images to people to secure dates, or to someone they had only met online.

  9. What You Should Know • A 13 year-old boy was arrested on child pornography charges, after receiving a nude photo of a fellow student on his mobile phone. • A 19 year-old cheerleading coach was convicted of indecency charges after taking a topless photo of herself and a 15 year-old girl.

What You Should Know • At one High School 6 students were arrested after a sexting incident. • 3 girls were charged with manufacturing, disseminating and possessing child pornography after taking pictures of themselves. • 3 guys after receiving the pictures on their phone were charged with possessing child pornography.

  12. Things to Remember • Think about the consequences • Think before you hit SEND. Anything on the Internet is public for anyone to see. • Remember that forwarding sexual material is a crime.

  14. Cyber-Bullying • What is it? • Is intentionally embarrassing, humiliating, threatening, or targeting an individual or group of people using e-mail, instant messaging, social sites, blogs, mobile phones, or other technologies.

Types of Cyber-Bullying • Flaming - sending angry, rude of vulgar messages directed at another person in private or in a public forum. • Harassment - repeatedly sending a person offensive messages. • Masquerade - pretending to be someone else and posting false information or placing another in danger. • Outing and Trickery - sending or posting sensitive, private, or embarrassing material about a person.

  17. If You’re Being Bullied • Do not respond to the harassing messages • Save all of the harassing messages • Tell a trusted authority figure • Change your account • Call the police

  19. Facebook Facts • Crimes involving Facebook were up 346 percent between 2009-2010. • Harassment is the crime most commonly reported on Facebook, with most eventually leading to some form of prosecution • However, sometimes the crimes can be more serious.

  21. What You Should Know • An 18 year old man masqueraded as high school girls on Facebook to get underage male students to send him nude photographs • He used these to blackmail the boys into performing sexual acts with him, which he took pictures of using his cell phone.

  22. Myspace Facts • In July 2007 Myspace removed over 29,000 sexual predators from its site. • Too late for some... • In Hartford in 2006, 7 girls between the ages of 12-16 were lured over the internet with men who were older than they claimed.
