About The Academy • Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade • The North Campus houses Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds) through 2nd grade. • Grades 3rd – 12th attend at our Main Campus. • We have 5 classes in each grade level, K – 6. • Our approximate total enrollment is currently 1800 which is nearing capacity. • Charter School • Public, no tuition • Public school with a private school feel • Chartered through the Charter School Institute (State Chartering Authority) • Board of Directors- elected parents that set policy and curriculum for the school.

High Expectations • We do have high standards for all! • The students work hard here at school and have regular homework as well. • On averages our classes are about 1 to 1.5 years above grade level, so is some of our curriculum. • We have structured classrooms where the students are expected to behave and not interrupt the learning for anyone else in the classroom.

  5. Core Knowledge • Knowledge builds on knowledge • Sequential building of knowledge • knowledge and skills are clearly defined for each grade level • students enter each grade level ready to learn • prevents repetition and gaps • broad base and rich vocabulary • Motivating for students to learn

Some of Our Curriculum • Saxon Math • Spirals, lots of review built in • We average about 30% of our students scoring advanced on CSAPs in Math • Sitton Spelling • Built on high frequency words and word study skills- not a spelling list to study for a week • Accelerated Reader • Intense Reading Practice • Accelerated Math • Intense Math Practice

Accelerated Reader • We teach students the fundamentals of how to read through phonics and specific comprehension strategies. • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE • AR is a way to mange the massive amounts of reading practice they need. • Students given 45-60 minutes during the day to read at school. • Students have a point goal, comprehension goal, and certification goal. • AR Home Connect (login with student login and password)

  10. PRIDE CLUB • All work turned in and on time • No discipline actions • Students can earn a punch for every week of school. • Students that earn a punch for the week get Pride Club. • If get all punches for the month, Pride Club bracelet and picture on the Pride Club Wall!

  11. Volunteering • Ask parents to Volunteer 4 hours per month This can be done in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to: • donations (valued at $10/per hour) • Classroom time • Chaperoning field trips • Projects done at home

Parent Involvement • We expect that you will be involved with your child’s education. • Making sure they get their homework done and setting up a space for them to do it without distractions • Ask them about what they are learning. You can find out that from the teacher’s Friday Newsletter. Enrich what they are learning through other learning experiences • Read with your child regularly • Read all communication from the school and respond promptly to deadlines

  13. Electronic Communication • This is our primary way of communicating. You need to make sure you read your email. • Weekly Emails • Fridays or the last day of the School Week • Teachers email Friday Newsletter and any flyers with announcements for all families • Wildcat Pause: All school weekly updates (sign-up on website to receive) Monthly • Elementary Newsletter Emergencies: We communicate first through email • Ongoing: Website for announcements and policies and teacher pages

Uniforms • Please check the Parent and Student Handbook, page 26 for specific information regarding uniforms. • Belts are required for grades 3rd – 6th. • Shirts must be tucked-in. • Shirt colors: red, navy, forest green, and white • Bottoms: Khaki or navy • SELECT styles of French Toast, IZOD, Target, Kohls, and Old Navy • Uniform Violations

  15. The School Day MAIN CAMPUS School Hours 7:40 am – 3:05pm (supervision for Elementary students begins at 7:20 am) Breakfast begins at 7:00 am NORTH CAMPUS School Hours 7:55 am – 3:20 pm (supervision starts at 7:35 am) Breakfast begins at 7:00 am

  16. Attendance and Tardy Policies • 3 tardies = afterschool detention • Please notify the attendance office of any absence by 9 am. Call 303-289-8088 x101 • Students may have no more than 9 absences in any attendance period of the day. 10 or more absences will result in a student being placed on an attendance contract and Retention Status.

  17. Lunch • Please fill out a free or reduced application. • Breakfast $2.00 • Lunch $3.25 for Elementary • For menus and to pay online check our website • www.theacademyk12.org • Under nutrition

  18. Drop-Off and Pick-Up • With the construction on 120th, please be patient and allow extra time! • Drop-Off on the two curbs perpendicular to the school • Students enter through the front doors at the Main Entrance. • Pick-Up • Choose a zone and drive through to pick-up your child (see map)

  19. Parking Lot • Afternoon Pickup West Parking Lot Procedures: • To alleviate some of the backup of cars entering the West parking lot and increase safety, the following procedures will be enacted from 3:00—3:25 pm each school day: • The cars in the pick-up lanes will continue as before, exiting to the round-about to head North on Lowell Blvd. • Cars in the parking spaces will exit to the west, through the parking lot “entrance”. The lanes leading from parking spaces normally spill into the Yellow Zone will be blocked off during the times indicated above. • The only way to enter the parking lot after 3:00 pm is via “The Road”. • Zones will no longer be assigned by grade level.
