Event Aims and Objectives: • Learn more about the changes affecting Apprenticeships in the business skills sector in England and Wales • Understand the new combined qualifications including level 2 and 3 Apprenticeships, and the changes to higher Apprenticeships • Hear about our new Business Skills BTEC Apprenticeship resources • Find out about our standalone BTEC qualifications • Ask questions and discuss the qualifications face-to-face with our sector experts and peers

Developments • Launch a new, integrated, high quality learner focused Pearson Business Skills (Business Administration, Customer Service and Management & Leadership) qualification and BTEC Apprenticeship offer • 01 September 2014: Launch of Pearson Business Skills BTEC apprenticeship offer • 01 January 2015: Launch of Business Skills BTEC non-apprenticeship qualifications

  8. Business Skills Apprenticeships • Continued inclusion of Functional Skill, PLTS and ERR • No change to Higher Apprenticeship model (L4 & L5)

What is a Combined Qualification? • Typically competence-based, a combined (hybrid) qualification combines both knowledge and competency elements within a single qualification. • Some units will be competency-based • Some units will be fully knowledge-based • Some units will be internally-assessed • Some units can be externally-assessed • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) is included within the qualification structures (levels 1 – 3)

Assessment and Quality Assurance • Workplace assessment • Assessment of occupational competence should be generated and collected through performance within the workplace and under workplace conditions • Competency based units • Primary source of evidence for competency based units will be through portfolio of evidence • Full knowledge units • Internal assessment which will be assessed and verified internally and externally quality assured • Onscreen Assessments available from 01 October 2014

ERR and PLTS • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) • Integrated as an optional unit within the Level 2 and Level 3 combined qualifications • Alternatively can be evidenced by the Skills CFA ERR workbook or by an accredited ERR unit • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) • Mapped to the combined qualification to demonstrate where these skills will naturally occur • Must be achieved and evidenced however there is no requirement to evidence PLTS completion when applying for Apprenticeship certificates

Approval and DCS • Automatic centre approval for centres • Approved against the predecessor qualification within the last 6 months • Approved against the predecessor qualification for over 6 months providing learners have been registered within the last two years, and have not received a sanction above 0, 1 or 2 within the last year • Direct Claim Status (DCS) • DCS will not automatically transfer • Standards Verifiers (SVs) will work with Pearson centres to achieve DCS in a timely manner as and when is appropriate

Standalone Business Skills BTEC qualifications Knowledge Based Qualification (BTEC) • From 01 September 2014, a technical certificate will not be a component of an intermediate (level 2) and advanced (level 3) Apprenticeship framework. • New BTEC Qualification Offer: • Aligned to new Apprenticeships • Progression into and from an Apprenticeship • Aligned to updated standards and industry trends • Delivered as independent learning programmes • Suitable for traineeships, programmes of study and CPD • Operational from 01 January 2015

Assessment Strategy: Business Administration • Some units will be externally assessed • ERR is an optional unit at levels 1 – 3 • There are currently barred units at level 3 & 4 only • Simulation can be applied to all level 1 Business Administration Units but it cannot be used at levels 2 – 4. • If a unit or part of a unit is simulated, it must be undertaken in a ‘realistic working environment’ (RWE) • Skills CFA encourages the use of an employer • direct model

Assessment Strategy: Assessor Requirements • Assessors must hold or be working toward an appropriate assessor qualification confirming competence to assess competence based qualifications. • Assessors working toward must be countersigned by a suitably qualified assessor. • Assessors who hold older assessor qualifications must demonstrate that they are able to work to the current assessment standards. • Assessors must be occupationally competent or have sufficient experience of the role for which they will be undertaking assessment.

Assessment Strategy: IQA Requirements • IQAs must hold or be working toward an appropriate qualification confirming competence to internally verify competence based assessments and candidates. • Working toward IQAs must be countersigned by a suitably qualified IQA. • IQAs who hold older verifier qualifications must demonstrate that they are verifying to the current standards. • IQAs must be occupationally competent or have sufficient experience of the role for which they will be verifying assessments.
