Significance of the Problem • College students diets are low in fiber, calcium, iron, cartenoids, and high in fat • Skip meals • Consume high amounts of convenience foods • 35% of college students are overweight • 2006 NCHA • 7.6% of students consumed recommended servings of fruits and vegetables

  4. Program Need • UHC Registered Dietician over consumed with program requests • CHWB needs assessment indicated nutrition topics are of top concern • Current UHC peer programs address: stress, wellness, sexual health, sexual assault, tobacco & other drugs

  5. Methods • Literature Review • Key Informant Interviews • Jane Jakubczak, RD • HEALTH Works Peer Educators • CHWB volunteers • Development of Peer Education Lesson Plan • Pilot Testing of Lesson Plan • Unit Plan (training) Development

  6. What is the UMCP Peer Education Program? • 3 credit class • 1 year commitment • One-hour presentations to various classes by request • Fraternities/Sororities • Clubs & other Student Groups • Special Events • Class once a week

  10. Recommendations • Additional pilot testing • More diverse population • Continual assessment of nutritional needs of college students • Outcome evaluation within 1st year of implementation

  11. Lessons Learned • Time management!!! • Culmination of skills from undergraduate and graduate work • Importance of pilot testing of materials • The needs assessment process is essential in program planning
