  2. Scientific Investigations How do we solve problems in science?

  3. Scientific Investigations All investigations require: • A research question • Careful observations • Data gathering • Analysis of data

  4. Different research questions require different types of investigations. • Descriptive Investigations • Experimental Investigations • Comparative Investigations Types of Scientific Investigations

  5. Descriptive Investigations • An investigation that involves describing and/or quantifying parts of a natural or man-made system . *A hypothesis is not required in these investigations. Example: Observing cells under a microscope and describing what is seen

  6. Comparative Investigation • Involves collecting data on different organisms/objects/features, or collecting data under different conditions to make a comparison. • Example: times of year, temperatures, locations • Hypothesis: Pecan trees produce more pecans during the rainy season than they do during a drought.

  7. Experimental Investigations (Measurable Results) • Can be used when focused on a single variable. • Conditions can be controlled. • Determines the cause of a problem. • A hypotheses is formed. • Ex.: Mysterious M&Ms lab

  8. Example Experimental Investigation Research Question: Do plants grow better in coke or water?

Do plants grow better in coke or water? • Research Question: Do plants grow better in coke or water? • Hypothesis Ex: Plants will grow better in water because plants need water to live. • Gathering Data: Controlled experiment with one independent variable. • Independent Variable: Type of liquid given to plants • Dependent Variable: Measured growth of each plant • Constants: Conditions kept the same (such as amount of liquid, type of plant, soil, amount of sunlight)

  10. Do plants grow better in coke or water? • Analysis of Data : Using graphs/tables to find trends in the data.

  11. Types of Investigations: Card Matching Activity • With a partner remove the 9 cards from the bag. • Place the cards face up. • Read the definitions for each type of investigation. • Match the “Examples” and “Questions” with the correct type of investigation. • Be prepared to discuss your reasoning.
