Lichens are organism composed with fungus (usually ascomycete) and algae (usually chlorophta or cyanobacteria) • Algae provides sugar from photosynthesis • Fungus provides water and protection from the environment. • physiology and biochemistry of lichens are very different from those of the isolated fungus and alga in culture.

  3. The dominant partner is a fungus. Fungi are incapable of making their own food. They usually provide for themselves as parasites or decomposers.

  4. Reproduce • Apothecia, Perithecia, and Mazedia are all reproductive structures. Each one produces spores which disperse and can produce a new fungus, but each of these structures looks and functions differently.
