  3. AQE Tests

  4. AQE • The AQE papers are based on English and Maths. The exams are based on the style of the previous transfer papers, minus the science element. • AQE are providing three dates for children to sit papers. A child can sit either two papers or all three papers. The best two will count. • The dates for AQE are three Saturdays: 10th, 24th November and 1st December. • There will be one paper on each of these mornings. They will take place in a participating Grammar school. • Each paper will contain a mixture of English and Maths

AQE cont. • Parents register their child with a participating Grammar school between 14th May 2012 and 14th September 2012. • Application forms available from AQE website • There is a fee of £35 (waived if child is in receipt of free school meals). • Send completed forms directly to AQE not Primary School • Results will be sent directly to parents by the Grammar schools on 2nd February 2013.

The AQE Application Form • Forms are available from AQE or directly from the schools • State where you would like your child to sit the test. • Nominate school for test venue. • Provide a copy of the birth certificate and a colour passport photograph • Provide information on any disability access requirements. • Or any other special arrangements that need to be considered.

  7. Special Circumstances Related to Tests • Same as the historic position. • More than half their Primary education outside Northern Ireland. • Children are AQE registered but unforeseen problems occur. • Medical evidence required or supporting information. • Closing Date for AQE 14th September 2012 • Closing Date for Catholic Grammar Schools 27th November 2012

  9. GL/NFER Tests

GL/NFER Tests • Catholic Grammars were originally planning to use a verbal reasoning test devised by GL Assessment/NFER. • As a result of serious concerns raised by Primary school Principals, they have changed to using tests based on English and Maths. • Children opting to sit the GL/NFER style tests will do so on Saturday 17th November 2012 (this is the date indicated to us at this point) • We are led to believe that there will be a supplementary test available – possibly 8th December.

  11. GL/NFER cont. • Parents will register their child with the Grammar schools between the beginning of May 2012 and the end of June 2012. There is no fee for the GL/NFER tests. • On the 17th November children will sit a fifty-minute paper in English and a forty-five minute paper in Maths. There will be a break in between the papers. • The children will sit these exams in a participating Grammar school. • Results will be issued by the Grammar schools directly to parents in 2nd February 2013, before the transfer interviews with Primary Principals.

  13. Outline for the Day • 8.30am – 9.15am: Registration • 9.15am – 9.30am: Familiarisation • First Paper will begin – English (lasts for 70 minutes) • 20 minute BREAK • Second Paper will begin – Maths (lasts for 60 minutes) • Completed by 1.00pm

Format of Papers • ENGLISH: 70 minutes in total • Practice: One Reading Passage • Three Familiarisation questions • Followed by 7 Practice Questions • ASSESSMENT: Three Reading Passages, followed by 55 questions and 10 questions (50 minutes) • MATHS: 60 minutes approx. in total • Practice: One Reading Passage • Three Familiarisation questions • Followed by 6 Practice Questions • ASSESSMENT: 45 questions

  15. GL/NFER & AQE • In both cases, parents will register their child with any participating Grammar school. (The children may sit the test in a different test centre.) • The results achieved in GL/NFER can be used to apply to any Grammar school using GL/NFER tests. • The results achieved in AQE can be used to apply to any Grammar school using AQE. • Results from GL/NFER – 2nd February 2013 • Results from AQE – 2nd February 2013
