  5. Economics/Demographics • Unemploymentrate: 7.9% • Gini Index (2010): 49.6 • 25th in the world • Economic Growth rate: 8.8% • Wealth distribution (consumption by percentage share): lowest 10%: 1.5% highest 10%: 37.9% • 34.8% of the population is below the poverty line

  6. Industries • Mining of Metals: Mining is one of Peru’s leading industries, and the exports include gold, copper, zinc, crude petroleum and byproducts. This industry greatly impacted the country’s economy through profits as well as taxes. • Fishing: Peru’s fishing industry is amongst the largest and the country gains large profits from its exports. It is often impacted by the inconsistent weather patterns (El Nino), but continues to provide income for the coastal regions. • Textiles: The textile industry originally bloomed in Peru because of the available natural resources such as cotton and other goods.

  7. Government • Type of Government: Constitutional republic • YOI: July 28th 1821 —Independence from Spain • Current President: Ollanta Humala

Events • 1746-Deadly earthquake hit Peru killing over 5000 people and creating much destruction—the only earthquakeworse than this was the 197o Ancash earthquake (100,ooo dead) • 1823 Simon Bolivar led an army from Venezuela and Colombia into Peru to help fight the Spanish—independence was declared by Peru in 1821, but it took till 1824 for Spain to finally surrender • 1980-Peru was in a general state of chaos which worsened by the occurrence of the “El Nino” which caused flooding and droughts in various areas around the country. This caused the collapse of the fishing industry and led to some economic downfall.

  9. Historical Figure • Ollanta Humala is the current president of Peru, put into office July 2011. • He ran as the leader of the Peruvian Nationalist Party • His campaign included promises to redistribute wealth to Peru’s poor majority, raise minimum wage, and to get rid of social exclusion. • Before starting his political career, Humala was a military officer who led a rebellion against President Alberto Fujimori, the father of Ollanta’s opponent in the presidential race.

  10. Current Issues • Sept 2011- This Tuesday, the anti drug agency will present to the congress, new policies for fighting against the large drug trade. Being the world’s largest producer of the coca leaf, its important to take these measures. • Sept 2011-Peru’s new government has initiated three new tax schemes to help fund anti poverty initiatives and other infrastructure. • Sept 2011- Recently, the government has declared a state of emergency on various provinces due to the activity of a terrorist group. In addition to finding the culprits, the police will also be looking into the problems of illegal trafficking of drugs

Culture: Virgendel Carmen Festival • This festival is full of Andean rituals and the Catholic religion (religion was impacted during the Spanish conquest) • Dancers wear costumes and revive ancient rituals that depict the battle between good and evil • It is held during many different times of the year, but on December 27th, it is known as La Peoncita, and allows for teenagers to perform the special dances. • Peruvians celebrate many festivals each year!

  12. Relations with the US • Peru has shared very strong relations with the USA since the inauguration of Toledo in 2001. • The US attempts to promote democracy in Peru tries to include this country in the growing world economy. • Ollanta Humala, president elect, is attempting to remain at peace and keep the United States as an ally.
