  1. Today’s Text: Luke 6:1-11 (Please read if you’ve not done so.)

  2. 6:1-11 November 24, 2013

  3. “Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.” (Psalm 119:33-36) JHK

  4. The Pharisees put a fence around the Law Talmud & Mishnah (Rabbinic traditions) Their idea was that by obeying the rules inside the fence, one would never come close to violating the Law. Torah (God’s Law) JHK

  5. Dangers of seeing the Law as more than it is: • The focus is on one’s own performance in obeying it. • Love for others is relegated to a secondary concern. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.” (Luke 11:42) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  6. The chief categories of acts of labor prohibited on the Sabbath are forty less one: one who sows, plows, reaps, binds, threshes, winnows, selects fit from unfit crops, grinds, sifts, kneads, bakes…” (Mishnah Shabbat 7:2) Talmud & Mishnah Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…” (Exodus 20:9-10a) Thirty-nine rules defining rest Torah Four commands specifying one principle: rest JHK

  7. Sola Scriptura (Latin “by Scripture alone”) is the doctrine that the Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness. Consequently, it demands that only those doctrines be admitted that are found directly within Scripture or are drawn indirectly from it by valid logical deduction. Sola Scriptura does not deny that other authorities govern Christian life and devotion, but sees them all as subordinate to and corrected by the written word of God. “In case a woman rolls wheat to remove the husks, it is considered as sifting; if she rubs the heads of wheat, it is considered threshing; if she bruises the ears, it is grinding; if she throws them up in her hand, it is winnowing.” (Talmud Shabbat 10) JHK

  8. “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.” (Deuteronomy 5:12-14) JHK

  9. “One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.” (Luke 6:1) “If you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.” (Deuteronomy 23:25) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  10. Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” (Luke 6:3-4) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  11. “David went to Nob…Ahimelektrembled when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone?. . . David answered, “The king sent me on a mission and said, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place…Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.” But the priest answered, “I don’t have any ordinary bread on hand; however, there is some consecrated bread - provided the men have kept themselves from women.” David replied, “Indeed women have been kept from us…” So the priest gave him the consecrated bread… (I Samuel 21:1-6) JHK

  12. Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” (Luke 6:3-4) Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27) God created laws to aid man; He did not create man to obey His laws. 6:1 - 11 JHK

  13. Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:5) “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” • Sometimes human need takes precedence over law. • Jesus has unique authority over everything, including the Sabbath. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  14. “On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:6-7) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  15. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there. (Luke 6:8) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  16. He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. (Luke 6:10) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  17. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:9) “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.” (Deuteronomy 5:12-15a) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  18. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:9) He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” (Mark 3:5a) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  19. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. (Luke 6:11) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  20. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. • Is there any similar observance or significance today? • What is the meaning of it being created for man? JHK

  21. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. “Remember the Sabbath by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son…nor your servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth…but rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:8-11) “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” (Genesis 2:2-3) “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.” (Exodus 31:13) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  22. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. • Is there any similar observance or significance today? “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.” (Colossians 2:16) No – One day is not more holy than another in the New Covenant. 6:1 - 11 JHK

  23. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. • Is there any similar observance or significance today? “Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.” (Hebrews 4:1) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  24. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. • Is there any similar observance or significance today? Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” (Revelation 14:13) God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” (Hebrews 4:7) “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.” (Hebrews 4:9-10) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  25. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. • Is there any similar observance or significance today? • What is the meaning of it being created for man? “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” (Hosea 6:6) Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27) “If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:7-8) 6:1 - 11 JHK

  26. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. The Lord’s Supper was made for man, not man for the Lord’s Supper. Which is more important… …Participating properly or using it to prepare for service? …God being pleased with how we partake or with how we live? …Ingesting the emblems or the Word (become flesh) they represent? …Grasping the letter or the spirit of the observance? JHK

  27. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome… …For everyone who is born of God overcomes the world. (I John 5:3)

  28. Lessons for Jesus’ Disciples 1) The significance of the Sabbath. 2) Which is more important: Practicing sound doctrine or displaying love to one another? • The Pharisees view of the Sabbath was such that obedience to the command caused others to suffer. • On the other hand, God’s commands are given to be obeyed and we are not at liberty to ignore or alter them. • So should our focus be on doctrine or on loving others?
