  1. Water Availability In India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal

  2. Introduction Water is one of the most important inorganic compound found in nature. It forms a major part of every living cell, plays vital role in regulation of the activities of living organisms like transport, temperature regulation etc. It serves as a habitat and most importantly it is essential for production of food and maintenance of appropriate hygiene for any healthy society. Lack of water, and its increased demand in the recent time has caused concerns all over the world. Climatic changes and loss of freshwater have alarmed many nations’ water sustainability. Water scarcity in many countries has caused things like desertification, crop loss, famine and drought. Human health is also affected in many ways, premature aging and dehydration related diseases like urine infection and constipation etc.

Water facts • The ancient Roman had better water quality than half the people alive now • Only 63% of the world population have access to improved sanitation • Waterborne diseases cause death of 1.4 million children’s death every year • Half of the world’s hospitalizations are due to water-related diseases • 70% of the world’s water supply is devoted to agriculture • Over 50% of all water projects fail in the first few years.

  4. Data For collecting my data I researched in www.nationmaster.com . The information that I found on this website indicated that India has the least water availability per person annually.

  6. Explanation The graph shows clearly that India has the least amount of water availability. While neighboring Sri Lanka has approximately one and a half times more water for every person than that in India. On the other hand Bangladesh and Nepal, which lie in the east and north of India have about four and a half times more water per person than that in India. Out of all these four countries Nepal has the highest water availability, because they have relatively less population and more water availability which comes from both rain and melting snow during summer. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, both have relatively more population density than Nepal but the monsoon brings them enough freshwater every year. While part of India is rain fed by the monsoon, the majority of India is not so well resourced with rain water. Compounded with that the billion plus population of India reduces their per capita share of water thus requiring immediate attention for enhancing water resources and usage.

  7. Conclusion In the light of the facts and figures that I have mentioned, I am pleading for external financial help for exploring new avenues of finding new water resources like desalination, practicing new ways of water conservation like rain water harvesting and constructing new dams and reservoirs to store water. Parallel with this, an extensive awareness programs need to be implemented in the society towards minimizing water wastage, practicing water recycling, from domestic to agriculture and industrial sectors. The urban areas and those parts of India where the frequency of rain is not sufficient need to be connected with water supply systems. This will require setting up an intensive network of water pipelines too. Considering the present financial condition of the nation, supporting such gigantic water related project will not be possible. Hence I request immediate financial aid to promote water conservation by rain water harvesting, making dams and reservoirs, laying the pipelines and propagating the awareness program about the importance of water and the ways in which it could be conserved and used sustainably.
