  1. Te Anau is a quaint town on the SW corner of the South Island—where we spent an afternoon en route to Milford Sound.

  2. Te Anau sits on a beautiful lake that borders the fjord region of New Zealand.

  3. Left: Bob would have loved to have flown around this area in the seaplane. Right: A gull sits on a lake measurement stick.

  4. On the way into the small town of Te Anau, we stopped at a park with a tourist information area. Outside in the park area, Bob decided to take a few photos of the bird art on the grounds. Some of these were very clever.

  5. The Russells found a nice shopping area and a place that made gluten-free pizza.

  6. We enjoyed some good pizzas at the PIZZA CAFÉ.

  7. New Zealanders are big on “natural” foods, which helped us find food Judy could eat.

  8. Downtown Te Anau was very photogenic. We bought some lotion at the pharmacy for the flies at Milford Sound—which were reputed to be ugly blood suckers!

  9. Of course, Bob had to check out the “Moose Bar” in town.

  10. The bar had a very nice area to watch television and enjoy a beer—or both!

  11. Six varieties of beer to choose from.

  12. Bob hoists his beer in a toast to some moose antlers in the bar. The inset shows the sign outside the bar.

  13. South of Te Anau a few miles was “Te Anau Downs,” the location of a Park Headquarters where we spent the night.

  14. The lodge was clean and comfortable—but not too fancy.

  15. Our room was clean, nice, and comfortable for a night. Judy took the larger bed.

  16. And Bob got the small one!

  17. A small refrigerator was in the room; the hotel provided us with a nice breakfast in our room the next morning.

  18. Just south of the Park Headquarters Hotel, we could see the edge of the fjords. Near the center of the photo, in the distance, was Milford Sound. We were worried that clouds might ruin our trip to Milford, but they did not.

  19. Not far from the hotel in Te Anau Downs, we spied several fields with hundreds of sheep in them. Wool production in New Zealand is huge and nearly everywhere we went, we saw fields of sheep—some shorn and some with wool coats.
