  1. Technology and Acid Rain Chelsea Marshall CPM00939@SJFC.EDU 1-347-940-1853

  2. Back ground Information • Acid Rain-Rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, typically to forests and lakes. • burning fuels, chemicals called 'sulphur' and 'nitrogen' are released into the air • Most of the 'sulphur' comes from power stations, which make electricity, and also from volcanoes. Most of the 'nitrogen oxides' come from car and truck exhausts.

  3. Back ground Information • When rain is acidic, it affects what it falls on: trees, lakes, buildings and farmland. when it is acidic, it can be very harmful to the environment. • scale called the pH scale that measures the strength of acids a. A low pH number means something is acid. • Usually rain is a little acidic, and has pH of about 5.5,

  4. Causes and Effects of Acidic Rain Causes Effects higher pHs and the lowering of populations of fish in lakes. Below PH of4.5 virtually no fish surviveo r reproduce. It also mobilizes toxic metals such as aluminum in lakes. Aluminum causes some fish to produce an excess of mucus around their gills, preventing proper ventilation. • The two main causes of acid rain are the chemicals sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. • Sulfur dioxide goes into the air from factories • that use coal as their fuel. Nitrogen oxide goes into the air with auto use, fires, volcano eruptions and lightening.

  5. What to do to stop it? • Understand acid deposition’s causes and effects • Clean up smokestacks and exhaust pipes • Use alternative energy sources • Restore a damaged environment • Turn off lights, computers, and other appliances when you're not using them. • Carpool, use public transportation, or better yet, walk or bicycle whenever possible

  6. According to my research… • There seems to be an ascending trend our PH balance is constantly increasing in all twelve of the areas measured throughout the state • High usage of fossil fuels in homes and automobiles especially in large cities where cars are drove often. Also there is a history in the New York State with the industrial revolution and the factories so there have been many years of releasing emissions • . To reduce acid rain New York State passed the clean air act and “has the toughest acid rain control requirements in the Nation.

  7. How is Technology being used? • promotions for electric cars, • the use of solar power to attempt to minimize and eliminate the use of fossil fuels • Creating an Eco Friendly Movement via social media

  8. Using technology for this project… • Technology has allowed organizations to gather, organize, store and publicize information to people like me • Also as a marketing major the use of internet opens a whole new world for me access to advertisements and marketing schemes and plans ect.
