  2. Definitions • Solution: A homogeneous mixture. It is uniform throughout. • Solvent: Is any substance that has other substances dissolved in it. • Solutes: This is the substance that is being dissolved.

  4. Special Case • Aqueous Solutions or (aq)???? • A solution in which water (H20) is the solvent.

  5. Solubility • This means the mass, usually in grams, of a solute that dissolves in a given quantity of solvent, at a given temperature. • Example: The solubility of NaCl in H2O at 20°C is 36g per 100ml of H2O

  6. What if? • What if you add 40 grams of NaCl to 100ml H2O at 20°C!!!!! How can we describe this solution? • What if you only dissolve 20 grams of NaCl in 100ml of H2O at 20°C!!!!!!!! How can we describe this solution? Solubility Table for Water

  8. Descriptions of Solutions • Saturated: • This is when no more solute will dissolve in the solvent and excess solute is present in the solution. • Unsaturated: • This is a solution that is not yet saturated.

  9. Descriptions Continued • Miscible Vs. Immiscible • Miscible liquids can be combined in any proportion. • Example: Ethanol and Water. Which one would be the solvent? • Immiscible liquids do not readily dissolve in each other. • Example: Oil and Water. What happens now?
